My car sounds like a vacuum cleaner... new problem!!

Hi everyone.
I am indeed VERY sad, cause over the last few days my car has developed this really funny sound under the bonnet.

At first about a week ago on morning, it sounded exactly like a vacuum cleaner sounds when you vacuum, lasted about 30 seconds and went away, but now it has esculated to the point where it is constantly sounding like that.

The sound is coming from below the airintake manifold, but that might be the sound echoing around in the engine bay. The weird thing is my car has no error light, and performance is still 100% present, no irratic idling either to indicate that it might be an airleak.

Now the mechanic I know here in Pta says I must bring the car there tomorrow,(saturday 10 sept.) and he will have a look, but I don't want him to bullshit me just because I am "mechanically chalanged".

Any thaughts as to what it might be??? :dunno:

Thanks guys. :thumb:

The only time I heard a sound like that was when my mech took a viscous fan coupling from a 5 series (or so he says...) and fitted it to my car whilsts we were waiting for the stealers to supply :argh: After fitment I immediately noted that my car sounded like vacuum cleaner + Cressida Gli 6 :fencelook:
I also noted that the engine wasn't as freerevving and felt down on power...

With my extremely limited technical knowledge, I would say it is viscous related.

pidgeon, cylinder 3.... Classic pidgeon sucking noises.... seen it a gazzilion times :)

Coisman, pop past tomorrow if you have time

it could also be your auxillary fan... my e46 used to do the same thing then the problem vanished never to be seen again.

but if not then viscous is my guess...

does it get louder when you rev and then slowly dissipate? or does it stop making the sound suddenly?

edit: if its the viscous your motor would run hot, but you wouldn't hear a noise. if somehow the 'clutch' on the viscous tightened up then you would hear a vacuum like noise But performance would drop. so im gonna go with auxilliary fan

Len, you a bit far from my house mate, so let me try my regional mech first, and if I'm not happy then we can talk. Maybe PM me your number.
Also it's my daughter's birthdat today, (9 sept.) and her party is tomorrow.

Like I said the sound a started on monday morning, lasted about 2 minutes and stopped. Then every day after it lasted longer, but then last night, and all today the sound stayed present. My feul echonomy is all ok, power 100% and the sound does not get louder, or maybe the lovely sound of the straight 6 is drowning the noise out. :)

i never took it personal nor did i feel as if he was attacking anyone. i dont take anything on this forum personal. everyone has their own views/oppinions, and i really dont care what they think of, for example, a 320i. i too meant what i said light heartedly and not as a reprimand, but as a joke. and also i'd never think that moranor would even say something to anyone with malice. im sorry if my comment offended you or made you think that i was retaliating. seems to me like you took something personal. be that as it may, or not, not my business.

@moranor: if you feel i was offended (or something) by your comment, i totally wasn't. no hard feelings bud

You see now Alister... everything you just said about taking things personal, and offending others is EXACTLY what Herr-bmw was trying to say about my car... :mmm:

The car has an electronic fan assembly - not viscus fan.
This happens from the word go ( when the car is just started), so it is unlikely that it is the fan unit.

View it on your cell phone.
Edit: because my FireFox is also just giving me the black box, and I had to test with my phone.
