My BMW E46 330i - The stuff of dreams

So here's an update on the car:

The minor oil leak was the oil filter housing gasket. The only way I diagnosed it was by removing the entire intake manifold (I assumed it would be easy!). After completing that horrible task I saw the accumulated oil on the side of the block which was evidently coming from the OFHG. So that's been replaced and at the same time I replaced most of the crankcase ventilation system hoses as the one leading to the dipstick was cracked, got Meyle replacement hoses from Imcomex, at the same time I had the vanos oil line rebuild and new washers fitted too. Have also replaced the serpentine belt, ac belt, ac tensioner pulley and alternator idler pulley.

I've been itching to replace my worn and cracked windscreen washer fluid reservoir. So today I went past Bemow spares and got a decent second hand one and a couple clips for interior trim.

Next up is an early oil change and engine flush.

Would also like to do the vanos soon, so I'll speak to Moranor @axis.

Will be prepping the car to paint the rear diffuser. The previous owner had it painted (poorly) silver which is now flaking and looking rather ghastly. Will be returning it to original black.

Here's some before and after pics of the new windscreen washer reservoir fitted. I think it really tidies up the engine bay.

Great stuff dude, the engine bay looks really clean.

On the fully colour coded issue, I don't like it. I think the the black beading breaks up any colour 330i just perfectly:thumbs:

Less is more:thumbs:

SNAP!!!! Love the car man!!!!

Ahh man! Your car looks mint! What a stunner. I'm keen to do the black grill mod, and are those angel eyes I see?

Painted trim works, takes years off the car, really depends on the colour though.

I think you already know how much I like your car, specially with that colour code trim mod! I just can't make up my mind whether an M-Tech 1 body kit would be able to produce the same/ or a similar effect. Additionally, I can imagine it's going to be quite difficult doing a DIY job since the trim surface is a coarse/rough plastic so prep work is going to be key to attaining the desired finish?

Love your car looks amazing !! Got myself one a few months back , was looking for a 325i but went to look at a 330i just for the fun of it ,when I started the 330i the sound of it made my neck hair stand up and its standing in my driveway now ! Idea was to trade up next year to an E90 330i or 335i but I fell in love with this car and might just keep it and do a deposit on a E90 BMW. Problem is got another car that I will never sell so I'm running out of garage space.

The black trim is of course, a matter of opinion, but I think on the Mtec1 and mtec2, the factory spec is the best!

Here's just a little update on my 330i:

The subwoofer box redesign is taking a bit longer than anticipated, but the box is complete and I'm just about to cut the hole for the subwoofer and ports. I am really excited to see the difference in performance with this new box.

Once I finish the varsity semester in November, I'll be tackling the cosmetic side of the car starting with the diffuser re spray (black) and repairing some scratches. Fog lights are also on the agenda as I need to polish the plastic lens caps as I did with the headlights.

Mechanically: one of my wheels is causing a vibration, so I'll need to get that sorted, am contemplating having them fixed and then powder coated gloss black. I've been wanting to do the black and silver theme for a while now. Shadow line exterior trim DIY, a gloss black vinyl for the roof and blacking out the grills should compliment each other well.

I also plan to do the vanos seal repair this year end.

A decent to-do list if you ask me!

Cheers,

Hey guys, looking for a little advice:

I have a friend with an E82 125i and while the exhaust system is stock, it just sounds terrific! It has a deep burble at idle/low-rpm but also barks and has the occasional subtle backfire. It is very theatrical and I really enjoy it.

So the question is, what kind of modifications are available to me to produce something like that?

I have done the golf tee mod which really increases the rumble and tone at idle/low-rpm but nothing to the extent of the aforementioned 125i.

Would a de-cat offer me any acoustic improvement?

Please keep in mind that the car will become a track car one day, so any modifications I do need to retain HP and torque.

Thanks Guys!

I also replaced my oil filter housing gasket and boy what a job it was. you prectially have to take everything apart to get there....its hectic that something so small can cause so much issues.....

good work:=):

Yes, a de-cat will change the sound, give Speedway Motorsport a call and find out what options you have. Depending on the age of the catalytic converters in your car, it might be high time to have them removed.

Lovely car man. Gotta love the e46 pre face. I was contemplating to color code everything on my e46, but decided against it. I'm just going to color code the door handles, boot spoiler, and the strip above the number plate :coolShake:

So decided to inspect my Air intake resonant flap/adjuster flap today. I think some people call it a DISA valve?

After the engine is warm, my cars idle always sounded a bit un smooth, a bit diesel like. So believe it was time to check the unit out.

Low and behold the unit was absolutely non-functioning. The plastic hexagonal shaft had been completely worn down and rounded. So the flap had absolutely no defined position.

So I've cleaned it up and got my trusty UHU epoxy to permanently fix the plastic shaft to the flap. It's now setting for 24 hours and I'll report back once I've had a chance to evaluate my fix.

With regards to my VIN printout, it says that my car came without Catalytic converters. Could someone please verify what this exactly implies. Does my car only have resonators then and does it imply that my branches do not have cats in them or the entire exhaust system is Cat free?

I haven't done a thorough visual inspection but I'm certain my car had some cat-like looking things in the main section.

Any thoughts?

Just got back from a hiking trip in the Drakensberg. I am very pleased to say that the car performed beyond expectations. I got 6.5litres/100km,on the way down there and 7.2 coming back up. This was with a boot full of luggage and 3 occupants in the car. Used cruise control all the way varying between 115-130km/h depending on the road surface.

Man I love this car!
