My '98 740i

After a terrible experience of owning a brand new MINI R57 JCW, I decided against new cars and started experimenting with older cars. The first was a Z4 3.0Si. 5 years old when I bought it, but it had under 50 000kms and it was in good nick. The ownership experience was great. Minor maintenance and lots of fun on the road. Had more luxuries (except bluetooth streaming of course) and felt like it was still better put together than the MINI despite it's age.

The better half decided she also wanted a roadster of her own. I thought it a bit much to have 2 roadsters in the house so I went about looking for a replacement for the Z4. In hindsight, the Z4 was more of a keeper, but I digress...

After looking at a few "family" cars, I had the bright idea of getting into my favourite 7 series. I didn't like the looks of the E65s and F01s were still too expensive for me to afford without speaking to a bank manager.

I had a been a fan of the E38 7 series for sometime. From seeing silver E38 Sport with the quad exhausts driving through my neighbourhood in the early 00s to driving in a mate's parents' ones when I was in varsity. I loved the cars from a distance but knew little about them.

I did a little bit of basic research on buying one and very quickly bought one (the 3rd one I looked at). From the outside it was great. Drove it and it drove well. Sounded lovely. After I picked it up I became a little bit more focused on my research and found the major issues it could have. I also ran in to @"Peter@AEW"'s details on this forum as someone who knows these cars. My luck, he worked from home in the same township where I lived. Little did I know the rabbit hole I was peeking into. Peter is very passionate about these cars and has helped me to find and fix plenty of problems on my car, "prevent" future problems and fix issues which no one else notices besides me and him.

A few bob and some 5 years later I am more in love with the E38 and have one as good as I pictured when was shopping around.

I was visiting my mom late last year and happened to see an E38 which was parked in the visitors bay of her complex.  I went back a few days later and it was still there. I had seen this car previously, driven by an elderly couple.  As a person who doesn't appreciate progress, I had the smart idea of making an offer on this vehicle.

It turns out the car had "shutdown" the electronics whilst on the road. The owner had recently bought an F01 so he was taking his time in getting it looked at to diagnose the issue. After a short conversation I assured him I will look after it and we agreed on a price.

I called @"Peter@AEW" to assist me in diagnosing the problem. "We" found the problem was a relatively minor one and managed to get the car started in 5 mins in the same parking lot. I drove the car to a parking bay a few kms away, with Peter following. He noticed that the rear suspension was "frozen solid". The car also had an uneven idle. Body and interior are in good condition. Some paint on the right hand side, but no signs of any major damage. Score!

Absolutely love the e38, and the shape was just brilliant. My eldest brother was lucky enough to own 2 of them and ill never forget how solid and comfortable they were. Congrats on the car and wishing you many happy miles and smiles

Wow, awesome!

I still absolutely love the look of these! Drop that stiff suspension, put on some 20's and you have a real gangster car... lol.

Enjoy! Wishing you many happy km's!

I Loved these. My grandfather had one on them. They were solid and luxurious. I was amazed at the time with EDC button. Probably the best looking 7.

I recall that Hoovies Garage bought one of these cars and concluded that it was the last great 7 series, and his only BMW with the least issues.
A proper driver's car and not an S-class emulator (which has become the case since 2002).
I remember reading Car magazine back in 1996 - the 740i back then cost R360k new.

The prettiest 7 ever made in my opinion. Also has 007 Bond heritage, which makes it bada$$.

Thanks all for the input. More pictures taken after the first wash. I’ve already sourced some 20”s and suspension for it. It’s not a straight forward job because of the Self leveling and my insistence on keeping the EDC. Will update as the work goes on.

Refreshing to see a decent tool kit in a luxury car (and I also assume a decent spare wheel too)!

You're really not helping my cause. I'm currently in a heart and mind struggle of getting an awesome example with lots of preventative maintenance done on it

You picked up a beauty there. Nicely done.
