So stripped out the radiator to see this.....

Two clear spots where it is leaking.... bottom left and top right. I thought I might have damaged it, but there's no point of impact.

So currently sourcing a Behr radiator as bmw wants 10500 before discount. Purchased new coolant and distilled water which will be filled after doing a flush.

Sadly my car was worked on by Ross Duncan who did my water pump, thermostats and new coolant all of which I bought and supplied, only to find out that the bmw coolant I supplied is not in the system......

It is what it is, but it just motivates me more to do more of these things myself.

While i doubt i will tackle anything on the engine and gearbox i will probably convince myself to consider all other repairs and maintenance.

Brand new Behr radiator delivered this morning, although it does not have the bleed screw ( not a train smash).

Based on the cost, the bleed screw costs R8000 as i paid just R2500

The bleed screw takes way longer to drain in any event, you are better off just removing the lower pipe.

Some pictures of the new radiator

Small update,

Purchased Engine mounts from Axis and the gearbox mount from Leo Haese hatfield.

Decided to do the fitment at Leo Haese Bosch, so discussed with John on availability and made my way there around 7am. As usual , its is always great chatting to John and catching up on Leo Haese actually. After booking in the car and waiting for the driver, I was still dropped off at the office around 8, which is on the other side Pretoria( from where Hatfield is).

Was kept informed as they progressed and ensured the car would be ready by the afternoon. The driver picked me up as I finished at the office even though he had to pick up other people , we still got there in reasonable time.

I always worry that the pick up and drop off can be convenient, but can also take up alot of time. Previously at BMW fountains, from the time i got to the service department, till the time i got to the office was about 2hours. That includes waiting to be assisted, waiting to be dropped off, waiting while the other passengers were dropped off and at that time, the office was about 10 min away from BMW fountains.

All in all, theres a definite difference in the start up and switch off, no more unneccessary shaking. There also used to be a slight vibration when idling around ( parking) in drive or reverse.

Might just be me but am pretty sure that there is less vibration at around 100-120km/h. I still have some vibration from a front wheel issue, but there seems to be a difference.

The other difference i noticed and for a while I thought it was pointing to other issues...Previously when in gear (cruise control on) and I would want to accelerate a little ( to overtake for e.g.), I would notice the revs go up by 100revs or so, my consumption gauge increase, but for a split second, no change in the actual acceleration of the vehicle. Now this was worse before and had improved after doing the intercooler and boost pipe seal etc, but it still annoyed me.

Thankfully, that issue is gone, the 'delay' is gone, which I chalked up to the time that all the mounts would first move before i would feel the acceleration. I also feel in a difference in the gear change, you can feel it bite that little quicker.

Wish i had photos, maybe I'll convince John the next time.:smilebounce:

Couple of weeks back we took this car down to Durban. Every since getting the X1 and before that the vw touran, this car wasn't doing the Durban trip.

I was curious to see how it preformed, first long trip with the RK software, new boost pipe seals, radiator, intercooler.

I am not one for speed and my process is basically the same every time I go to Durban unless it's an unplanned trip. Fill the night before, inflate tyres to correct pressures, reset all obc information, then reset trip meter when leaving in the morning and driving the same route.

I normally keep to the limit plus 10km/h and with an hour or so stop at halfway for breakfast, I was at my parents house 7 hours later. The roads were fairly quiet which allowed for a nice stress free drive and my consumption was the best I ever achieved with this car at 5.9 l/100km.

The next day we went down to the south coast which saw more freeway driving but the hills in kzn and Chatsworth can really kick that consumption up a few notches. At the end of the tank, I also bettered my previous best of 6.71 l/100km 4 years ago and achieved 6.25 l/100km.

After all that sea spray and crap from the trip down I wanted to get her cleaned properly. With extremely short notice I contacted Ricardo at detail excellence in Durban to give the car a good clean. I decided to go a little more than just a maintenance wash and get some added protection for the trip up, on top of the wax I applied not too long ago.

I will let the pictures speak for themselves.

Before, not many pictures, but it was filthy.

Thanks guys, was a huge shame that it was raining on the day it was done, but I am of the opinion that I would rather have a clean car in the rain.

It is much easier to clean a few days of dirt and road grime than weeks or months. I try to wash once the car gets a certain amount of dirt on it, but also dependant on the type of dirt.
