My 530d M-Sport (Detail and wheels update pg 11)

Just before hitting the 200k km I decided to change the stabiliser links as it was the last part in the suspension that wasn't changed other than shocks and springs. I bought them from imcomex, but might have to change the right one.

For some reason, I didn't notice that the OEM part used a hex bit and the new one an allen key bit, so I think I.damaged the part when trying to torque, end result was that I couldn't get the right.side.to the right torque, I was about 10-15nm lower before the allan key bit starts to slip.

Have to say, the meyle part supplied felt more durable, thicker than the OEM, but I felt no.difference. I felt an annoying knock on the suspension every.now and then which I cant seem to pin point, I have changed everything except the shocks, springs and steering rack. At the last suspension check,I was told my powerflex bushes and other parts that were changed are worn, yet there's not enough movement to substantiate that, or could they replicate the noise and isolate it to a specific part.

The next thing that was annoying the hell out of me was the boost leak, even after changing the intercooler and putting new OEM seals.... here you can see almost half the seal was split. Thanks to Danny for finding this as I had previously inspected and didn't notice the seal was split.

So new seal in thinking all is this.good, I check again after a few weeks and the drip tray has a wet spot.....

Took even longer to find the time to strip again but when I did find the seal split again.

This time I took note of the wear on the clip, the other.side clip does not have this wear and is not leaking.

Thinking I could order a new clip I called BMW, only to be told, clip is not sold separately, only with the pipe....At 6500ex vat.... WTF.

Chatted on the group's, got.some suggestions but eventually Jerry from Leo haese organised some clips, but unfortunately, they don't fit. The e60 uses a different design. Even the part number I find it for the other side of the pipe and it won't work.

So I am still looking for a replacement clip

The clip I need is straight on the sides. At this point, I found a replacement pipe on eBay that comes with the clip, which I.might order if I don't come right soon.

Bliksem wosh i can buy this 5er!
Well done buddy! Car is clean! So sexy!
Shot Bru,
Every time I think of selling and looking at F10 options..., i go through the same routine.... i would buy a car that is slower than mine, even a stock 535d would not feel the same, then there will be all of the cost of preventative maintenance, before modding starts....nah, i'd rather keep her and just pay off debts.

Sash's car just shows how proper maintenance and care goes a long way with these cars. His cars looks, runs and sounds better than most much newer cars with a third of his car's mileage:bravo:

Yes definitely, mine is the M57TU2, which seems to be the second update in the M57 motors ( 173kw). Double check which one you have and then you would know what differences there are between the updates.

Thanks Schalk, sometimes I think I over spend and go overboard when it comes to maintenance, but at the same time, she has never left me on the side of the road (touch wood)

Just checked my VIN now and it says
Engine M57T2
Power 170kw / 231hp

Tried putting my googling skills to the test but cant find much on the M57T2 :hammerhead: Apologies for adding this to your cars thread

It hasn't been that long since this thread was updated, but it feels like ages and like so much has happened. Many already know but on the 31 October 2018 my turbo was laid to rest..... in pieces.... in my intercooler.... and out of the boost pipe

img_20181031_162131_1_9583453442.jpg

First of all, my mileage was on 204000km, original turbo, which had a whine from the day I got it (117000km), the whine got louder when the Downpipe was done, which was acceptable. The car was modded from around 125000km and as far as I am concerned, the whine never got worse. I did struggle with boost leaks, initially the seals were changed, intercooler cleaned, but everytime i opened the underride covers i would still see a leak. Eventually I noticed the intercooler was also leaking and changed that along with new seals, but it still leaked, it also was going through seals. So even though I hardly drie the car hard, i'm sure this had something to do with its demise.

It was a sad sight seeing her on the side of the road, bleeding oil after her somewhat major injury

To make matters worse, she wouldn't start to get her into neutral so the tow company had to arrange for dollies to get the rear wheels off. All this meant more time at the side of the road, the only person able to pick me up was my wife, who had already picked up my kids, so I made a decision to let the tow company sort the car out and get it to the mech.

The mech of choice was DVN automotive in boksburg and he came highly recommended. Denis assisted in opening up the shop afterhours to receive as well as do an initial assessment on the damage. He advised that there was some oil in the intake ( which is why it didn't want to start ) and a worst case scenario is that I might have to consider a rebuild. I never planned to sell or get rid of the car, so I advised Denis to move forward irrespective, I am keeping the car.

Over the next few days he was able to tell me that the compression in all cylinders were the same which was great news and we should sort the turbo out and take it from there. The turbo that came out was a sight .....

While Denis was busy assessing the damage, I had contacted Danny from DSC Motorsport as he was previously helping me diagnose the boost leaks. After our discussion he was more than willing to assist with repairing the boost pipe as well as change the ends of the intercooler to accept a normal silicon pipe with a proper t-clamp. Keeping in mind that I am in Centurion and the car in Boskburg, Danny offered to pick up the pipes. The boost pipe was repaired

After alot of back and forth with various turbo dealers trying to source a good second hand turbo that i could overhaul, i gave up. There were many 3.0d turbos, but none from a e60, while I was under the impression that more than one would work, I learnt that the inner parts vary, which is confirmed when you look at the interwebs for part kits for the various turbos ( the ones that were looked at was the E46, E53 and E83).

I then turned to sourcing a new turbo, which also seemed to prove difficult as some shops mentioned the different versions ( even though i supplied a VIN). After a wrong one was ordered at one shop I managed to find the correct one ( hopefully) at Goldwagen Kyalami. Thanks to @Nikhil for introducing me to Zammo at GW Kyalami, best service, always seems to source good quality parts and is way more knowledgeable than most 'parts guys' i have come across in recent times.

After having paid upfront for the turbo it was ordered, took just a day....oooh..... so shiny...

had to be sure it was 100% correct. This is a proper Honeywell Garrett turbo with all the part numbers as my previous turbo

good thing that the turbo also comes with the gaskets to mount onto the exhaust manifold.

Hi Sash, cannot remember if you mentioned in your posts ever changing the oil separator/filter on your car? I do know that two of the three E60 530d's i have had only one had a separator in and the other two had nothing in! My actions nowadays is to remove said separator or filter and have nothing in the housing.

My next decision was whether to mod the turbo or not.... many said not to, its new, its perfect. I always had the intention of modding the turbo, just didn't get to it in time. After careful consideration and loads of reading into billet wheels, sizes, blades, heights, housings and ratios, i decided to modify.

Instead of going with the locally available wheel Keithan from RK Motion suggested importing a wheel. I don't know the full specs on the wheel, but its bigger and billet. Unfortunately getting parts of yonder the ocean is never an easy feat, so I waited patiently, knowing that the turbo still had to go to Gaby at fastec turbos. There was nobody else that was going to work on the turbo, if it wasn't going to be Gaby it would have stayed stock. Danny again stepped to assist in getting the turbo to Gaby from Fastec Turbos, to the extent that I didn't see or speak to Gaby, its like Danny = Gaby :roflol:

Danny pulled strings, called in favours, did hard labour :sorry: to ensure the turbo got done before Gabby closed.

The turbo was then dropped off with Denis to complete fitment as well as tackle an oil leak i noticed prior to this whole situation and change my vacuum pipes. Denis believed the leak came from the oil filter housing and replaced the seal on that and i supplied silicon piping to replace the vacuum lines. The car was finished and ready to be picked up in January and was informed that she started up great, burned off excessive oil and drove well.

I picked up the car, started driving home and noticed the aircon wasn't getting cold, a quick call to Denis and he confirmed they didn't touch the aircon.

The car was dirty from being parked outside for almost 2 months so i first priority was to wash her before even getting into the garage. To my dismay i found the following;
-Right front mudflap loose and missing a screw
-Engine undercover missing screws and some damage to it ( it had damage before, but a point of impact)
-the underside wasn't cleaned, or if it was cleaned the another leak might be there
- there was glue on the left front fender and headlight
- missing bolts on engine cover
- cigarette ash inside the car ( i dont allow smoking in my cars) on the dash
- oily fingerprints on interior trims and exterior body panels
- a cigarette butt stuffed between the bumper and trim ( underneath car, so no way it came from the road)
- A scratched wheel
- A scratched rear bumper
- Scratch on the right side skirt
- Missing screwdriver from toolkit ( which Denis initially mentioned he had with him as the towtruck driver used it when towing the car)

My initial communication was to Denis, who assured me they never touched the aircon, the tow truck driver struggled to get the car off the truck and damaged the under covers, but being 2 months later, I couldnt go back to the tow company. He mentioned he drove the car himself and didn't damage the wheel, and was probably the tow company.

Denis offered to make things right, but since I can't prove what damage happened where, I didn't expect everything to be resolved, but the screwdriver and aircon was my main concern as some of the other issues I could resolve at minimal cost.

Denis did offer to regas the aircon and change the seals, but when I wanted to arrange a time, he wasn't responding to messages or taking my calls. I decided that with the heat wave we were going through, I needed the aircon running and found a place in Centurion that was able to assist. In true BMW fashion, there was the pipe that was damaged ( it runs along close to the boost pipe), but in a weird spot and the aircon place found it strange, until i mentioned the turbo replacement. Getting to the bolts on the turbo and working with the boost pipes incorrectly can put unneccesary strain on the pipe. BMW wanted almost R2k for the pipe, so it was decided to repair this alu pipe and replace the connectors.

Another issue that was encountered was the boost pipe needed to be adjusted. Denis was asked to check fitment after the changes were made, if neccessary, Danny would get it sorted to ensure all was correct. I was informed by Denis it fitted with some adjustment. After driving for a few days Alex noticed that the bolt holding the boost pipe was off and pipe was skew, which meant the pipes needed to be adjusted. Danny was kind enough to loan me his car to get home while he sorted out the adjustments on the boost pipe. Since then everything is intact (holding thumbs)

To cut a long story short, after everything that happened above, Denis was surprised that I was unhappy about the above after he offered to sort out whatever he can. When Denis became aware and was responding to messages on a Whatsapp group, I provided pics of the aircon pipe that was damaged and he accepted that it could have been damaged during the time it was at the shop and offered to pay for my aircon repair in full, which he did almost immediately.

For those that weren't on the group, my intention was not to force anyone to pay for my subsequent repairs. I dont run after people hoping for handouts, I just wanted my car sorted. For those that know me well enough, would know that I hated seeing my car in that condition. After Denis stopped responding to messages I made the choice to move on. My post on the whatsapp group and this forum is to detail my experience as it happened. I can't prove where what damaged occurred where or who was responsible, but can state the way i got it back.
