Looking great Sash.... pity I could not make the run, we had guest round for rugby and a braai otherwise there would of been a 3rd one - albeit a pale silver version....

Yeah, would have been great. Although means waiting till most of the cars have left to get the good shots. We need to definitely get all the E60's together for a shoot some time.

I kinda forgot about this update but there was an annoying knock on the front suspension and since i had already changed LCA leading and trailing, I had the car checked by Syds Suspension in PTA on their wonderful machine that is able to put the suspension through its paces.

We noticed the one of the swing supports needed to be replaced and the ball joint+ rack ends seemed to be on its way out. I was also recommended to replace the shock mounts as this seems to be a common issue on the 3.0d.

After recovering from the shock received from BMW on these parts I contacted Axis, who managed to source Lemfoerder and Sachs parts (made by ZF).

No pics of the install unfortunately as I got someone else to fit them . Best part of this process was the fact that I was quoted less by Syds Suspension to replace the worn parts( using partquip parts) than BMW, but I managed to get better parts(in my opinion) from Axis and with the labour to fit it still came in considerably less than what Syds wanted to charge.

What kms has the car done Sash? Just for interest sake. I dont have any funny noises - not that I can hear and no unusual handling but can imagine that I will need to look at these parts at some stage. Mine is now on 180k

The car drives much better now and it is so quiet.., given that i have 19's on low profiles, but it is quiet for what it is.

Since then the car had also seen Ross Duncan for oil service with Liqui Moly 4100. I chose to change oil filter, fuel filter and air filter. Cant say i noticed a difference after the service.

While doing the suspension i noticed that my front brakes are on their way out, so that next in line.....

I am on 163k , I get the feeling that my car was taken on corrugated roads at some point in its life, when i got the car , I spent alot of time cleaning mud out of the wheel arches and under carriage.

Its nice and clean then and I baby it..,. maybe too much. I take preventative maintenance seriously, I could wait for things to fail and get my warranty to pay, in fact, there was no sign that my shock mounts were worn, the rubber in them are still fine, maybe just less grease compared to the new ones. Only one swing support was worn, but i replaced both( normal).

The ARB bushes are not worn out, but I am upgrading to Powerflex, my rear disks and pads arent worn completely, but I am replacing them..... I might have a problem...

i normally complain about these things to her over a period..., then when i speak about sorting them out it seems to be less of an issue to convince. My wife knew how i was about cars, in particular my cars from before we were married haha, so i think that also makes it easier.

If you don't mind me asking; who did you use to install the parts?

It actually was a friend from my area in Pierre van Ryneveld, He has/had his own mechanical repair/service business but does not have premises anymore, so he assisted me by doing the work at my house( i live 300m from him). He works on mainly BMW, but others as well.

Much appreciated, this car has not left me stranded in the almost 4 years I have had it.., it the least I can do.

While doing all the research required for sourcing the brakes i noticed that alot of the items on RealOEM had multiple part numbers. Initially it seemed to be confusing since it wasn't easy as options like active steering, folding mirrors that the car would be with.

Now while many now this already, it confused the hell out of the parts sales people as i always try to correlate the parts back to the OEM part number.

I refer to the part enclosed in a bracket with
For vehicles with
Usable load increase
or
Chassis, officials utility vehicle
oem_9560578023.jpg

For those who didn't know, if the vehicle was being built for official purposes and I know in the UK the E60 ( in my case) was often used as a police vehicle, the vehicle would be built with these parts. They are essentially parts from a higher specced model, in this case 540i, 545i or 550i that are installed into a lower specced model.

The results is different calipers, bigger i assume, with bigger disks and pads. The only parts needed if you wanted to upgrade are those mentioned above.

After having my front brake warning come on, I went ahead and investigated all the parts needed for my brake service. Initially i was planning on only fronts, then relaised my rears pads had a little more life than the fronts so decided to include the rear pads.

I noticed my front disks had quite a deep ridge on the outside so also included new front disks in my research. Then reading up to just replacing the pads saw various comments related to skimming the disks if new pads are installed, while others stated dont skim. Then theres talk of new pads wearing faster due to used disks and the why it is already worn...

After lots of consideration i decided to fork out the extra and replace the rear disks too.

After lots of calls and comparing prices( its in my blood) i ended up with
ATE disks front and rear and Textar pads front and rear, with the brake sensors as well. I had also ordered powerflex bushes from Axis and they were sitting in my garage so decided to fit them too.

I tried to document the process but after the first day, i needed to speed up the process.

I decided to jack up the car and put it on stands so that the entire front would be off the ground. Stripped off the wheel and was greeted by this.

I loosened the size 18mm bolts which allows the carrier to come off
img_20160824_111338_4396976698.jpg

Removed the dust caps to expose the guide bolt, used an allan key (no 7) to remove this
img_20160824_111357_2598738861.jpg

The guide bolts are different lengths for the top and bottom, I cleaned parts as I removed or refitted, old vs cleaned
img_20160824_114036_9221851974.jpg

I removed the allen key screw ( size 8) holding the disk in place
img_20160824_111308_9418067163.jpg

With the caliper and carrier off the disk is able to just pop out, didnt even require a tap. Had a little rust but nothing serious.

Cleaned and greased

Quite a ridge on the old disks

To do the front ARB bushes I loosened the stabiliser link nut ( 16mm wrench with T30 torx in the middle)

The brackets were removed thereafter ( 13mm wrench)

ARB out

Front bushes had some wear on it
img_20160824_112424_5737343067.jpg

Surprised at the amount of flex it had

Old vs New
img_20160824_112632_4097775039.jpg

Powerflex has significantly less flex ( I was trying my best to twist with one hand, with 2 hands yes it could be flexed more, but the OEM one could probably be stretched 180 degrees with 2 hands)
img_20160824_112647_1041927193.jpg

Cleaned up the brackets
img_20160825_082000_1736347042.jpg

Cleaned up the ARB and greased the bush using the powerflex supplied stuff
img_20160825_082025_7438423046.jpg

ARB fitted back
img_20160825_091713_9355411804.jpg

The rears were basicially the same as the front, in fact easier and less complicated, so theres less pics.

Rears pads, old vs new
img_20160825_113112_6425657081.jpg

Rear disks old vs new, nowhere near as bad, there was a ridge on the inside not the outer face, but i still preferred to change them

Old Bush flex

The grease supplied, is copper slip :tease:

Well done Sash, I am sure it feels might tighter. Have you done the end links yet? My old bushes & std ones which came with the z4m ARB I bought could also flex as much as your old ones.
