go test drive the 320i a few more times to get a feel for the car
your answer should be obvious when changing cars... go with the one what speaks to you :) after all we dont NEED a BMW
you want one because it makes you feel good so choose the one that makes you happy...

Although I have completely the opposite taste in car performance to moranor, I do fully agree with the above 100%.

I'm just rooting for the diesel. I know it "'speaks to me" way more than a petrol equivalent ever could.

Guys, I really appreciate all the comments.

I know this is an age old battle - diesel vs petrol, and we'll never have a conclusive answer since it comes down to personal preference.

It's refreshing to learn that I am valid in my confusion as to whether this is a wise decision. I'm battling with both sides of the coin, and everyone has raised valid points. I guess going with the gut is a good point.

I definitely agree with the points that Vicus has made about the diesel's way of getting from A to B. It's a great delivery of power that doesn't take a lot of fuel to do it. I do love diesel and have no problem with it.
I do also agree with the different driving dynamic that a petrol delivers - higher revs and a screaming engine does bring something out in a person.

In summary I guess I'm convinced that I will sacrifice a lot of fuel saving in favour of a better installment, but on the power side I will sort of have the same, it's just the way in which it produces it.

In short I will probably score just under R1k on installment. Extras are kinda the same, I score a sunroof and front PDC over mine. The car is 12 months younger, with a payment term of 5 months longer than I had left.
So I will have about 6 months left on the motorplan after the car is paid off, vs now where I will run out of motorplan 3 months before I've paid it off.

hahahaah this argument nog :roflol:

Thankfully they both good cars, I reckon just goes down to personal preference.

As much as I love the "i"......in guise of the 2.0l 4cyl.....does not make the lovely inline 6 sound. For the "d" ...we already used to the sound

The RPM argument is pointless if the car has a auto box :flyfun:

Why bud ?
You can drive the auto in "manual" and change when you want (except of course if its extreme)

Wow, this is a pretty tough decision.

It sounds like you have thought this through pretty well, and that you are well aware of all the pro's and cons. Good luck with your choice. :)

Should have added 'IMO' at the end of that sentence since we all have different driving styles. I get zero joy from revving my 335i to 6000rpm in D/S so I never do it. In a manual 335i it's a very different story. In other words I hate auto and DCT boxes.

ThomasF30, R1k doesn't justify the downgrade because you'll need to fill up more often in the 320i.

Yeah, I guess 1.5 extra tank p/m = almost my saving.

I'll let you guys know what I decide on!

Well my name speaks for itself. But may I ask if times are so tough why are you driving a latest model BMW? Why not get an e90 lci 320d? Or even an e46 330d.

I actually looked for a e90 320d, but they're tough to find still in plan. I dont want to drive a BMW outside of plan... That's just a personal level of comfort and security / piece of mind I need. And then at best I'd have to extend the plan by 2016 again...

If it was me i would go 320i,

1st - Save a grand pm
2nd - Newer car
3rd - Motor plan extended
4th - You dont need the torque in everday driving
5th - later on, software and you get 328i power lol

depreciation is by far the biggest expense on a new car...

I would look at what you will loose with both options given when you expect you will want to trade in...

currently I think Diesels loose less but I would be wrong...

if nether grabs you and make you want it over the other then look at depreciation...

Depreciation on BMW's used or new is always gonna be a problem. Depending on the model of coarse.

My 2007 330i M-Sport was 220k when I bought it in 2011, today its work 150k to 160k or so. Mad in my opinion as it is such a solidly amazing car.

you loose less the older they get... I could sell my e46 tomorrow for the same price I bought it for a good few years ago...

fuel savings are nothing compared to depreciation unless you do massive KM...

320i because N20

N20 because JB

JB because it will outperform the 320d and u still get decent consumption

The end.

Stock 320i has a slight edge 0-100 etc etc etc over the 320d but it doesnt feel as lively with the 320d's torque.

Open minded guy I would say would choose the 320d over the 320i because of this. I on the other hand am a petrol fan, and would go 320i.

get an e90 320d, even if you extend the plan till 2016 and after it expires get an aftermarket warranty, it would still be less money lost than on the f30 320i

We currently own 2 F30's 320i's, are are really nice cars, and flippen quick, a massive improvement over the E90,

However, I currently drive an x35i, I would have my 8 year old diesel back any day...

The 320i is faster, but once addicted to the low end torque of the diesel.... you cant go back...
