i've got a 328

We are comparing stock 320i to stock 320d. What ever the technical differences may be. If we boost the 320i, it is no longer a stock 320i.

Eeerrmmm, atleast he'd get to experience a n20 doing what is built to do...

Yeah, I hear you. And understand your sentiment.

The 320d actually becomes more of an asset the longer you keep it, as the fuel saving takes effect more and more.

You had a good argument going until you called the car an asset... :nonono:

That makes as much sense as having fun changing at 3000rpms

Then again this thread is probably about fuel cons and not the joy of driving. Get the d

Will be hard to sound cocky when you smelling my fumes right at the back:blab:

My whole feeling is that diesels still sound like diesels... and its not a nice sound, regardless of the performance. This is MY opinion don't flame me. Diesels aren't for everyone :).

But back to the point of this thread:

Thomas, it is actually not such an easy choice. We don't really know the figures involved etc.If you are really getting a car that much newer, and the cost is low enough, it may be worth it.

Since you have owned a "d", and driven the "i", I guess only you will really know which option is really best. Trust your "gut" bud, and do what you feel is best.

You need to hear v.r.sexy's and Rayzor's cars....sounds very very far from a diesel!
No where near a straight 6 sound, but very close to a turbo 6 sound :praise:

you welcome to come and take mine for a drive. It is quieter than some petrol cars and sounds like an I6. But you can make up your mind when you hear mine

this again... at the risk of starting a 20 page Rage war:

I will never buy a Diesel car I just hate how they produce power... it is all down low and then dies up top hardly worth revving at all to me it feels like having half of a very powerful engine with the top of the rev range gone... idle sound makes me cringe...

no not for me thanks... for me Petrol delivers what i want in a car quiet and smooth when driving normally and a screaming animal when I want to misbehave...

who here can honestly say they when they see and hear a Ferrari at full tilt that they wish it came in Diesel? no it is an emotional thing while the Diesel makes alot of sense it is just not the same for me and I dont want it...

ThomasF30

go test drive the 320i a few more times to get a feel for the car
your answer should be obvious when changing cars... go with the one what speaks to you :) after all we dont NEED a BMW
you want one because it makes you feel good so choose the one that makes you happy...

I think the downpipe and backbox mod changes the sound completely

Hi Mate

I am a huge diesel fan, been driving them for years. Love the easy going nature of them. I however always had a performance petrol car on the side for a bit of a blast.

I personally went for the 320i recently as I couldn't justify a 6 year payback for a diesel. I do enjoy the way she drives. Nice and easy when you want, but very lively when you need it. There is something to be said about revving above 4000 rpm........

As for economy, it's totally dependent on your right foot. If I wind it, I will get around 12l/100km, but driving at the speed limit down to Durban, I managed 6l/100km and 6.7l/100km on the way back. In 85% town driving, I managed just over 10l/100km recently and that was all short trips of about 3km, never really allowing the car to warm up completely. Put that in perspective, my wife's Jetta TFSi DSG, which has the same type and size of engine, used 8.2l/100km on the run down to Durban this past Sunday and am averaging around 13.4l/100km on the same sort trips.

At the end of day, it's a very personal choice, we can all tell you our views, but only you can make up your mind.
