Thanks for all the input gents!

I have sadly decided against the x35i range. :'(

I just won't be able to comfortably afford the maintenance and if something were to go wrong. Maybe in the future I will buy one, but for now I need to keep the practical side in mind as well, as this will be my only car.

Thanks again to everyone, I learned a lot and 135i is on my wish list to stay.

Y O L O bru!!!...

I have a N55 DCT which is my daily. No complaints...except fuel...and tyres...did I mention fuel?:blueCry:

Have you owned a N54 ? The reason I ask is because i definitely know a few N54 motors that are just as reliable as any other car .

:dunnoanymore:

Most of the comments on Bmw n54 comes from guys that heard through hearsay or just read up on it .

As i have said , I know of a few bmw n54 here in Durbs modified and standard that proof otherwise on maintenance .

NOT to say that there are those that do give issues .

jA i get that its well documented . its the same weak points that need attention in the start . but most guys when modding will not attend to those weak points first and when they do go more boost .. it gives up and becomes and a well documented stat .

:smilebounce: i hear bout friends mocking .. but i know of these cars that are daily driven and then weekend abused and then still long distance driven . provided that they maintained right .

yup . fun cars.

N54 ftw! You can tell your friends you have a 3l twin turbo...

I might buy my second n54 135i soon if the right one comes up.

Manual is real enthusiasts car.
Sunroof is a plus.
M sport is a bonus..
R200k is decent budget

No I have never owned a N54 and definitely never will.

Your mates are very lucky then, because it definitely isn’t just hearsay, they have significantly more “known issues” than any other BMW motor that i know of,but that doesn’t mean they aren’t great motors with a lot of potential.
The OP’s post was to find out which 135i motor is the most reliable and the N54 is definitely not the most reliable out of the 2.

N54 is reliable like any bmw engine they have their "common issues" once those are sorted they are rock solid bro. Mine is running well now for 10k kms no issues simple bolt ons and a mhd tune car runs really well. It is pricey to maintain but we'll worth it. Lol but I'm biased I really never had a better or more fun car than this n54.
Based on heresay....

N54 motors are now 12 years old.

Items that had recalled and campaigns
- injectors
- hpfp

Items that need to be changed at some point
- coils
- waterpump & thermo
- turbo wastegate arms due to rattling.

Its an old engine and old car in eithet e90 or e82 guise. The jokes and memes etc are mainly due to trolls.

As with ANY of BMWs engines, there are items that give problems, the n54 and n55 engines themselves are solid.

My bro owns a STOCK e92 2006 335 with n54....

HE Still has the same waterpump, coils, chargepipe, turbos (started to rattle last month) , injectors he bought the car with in 2008. Current mileage 120k plus kilos.

Unreliable, not by a long shot. Theres a reason it won NUMEROUS consectutive awards for engine of the year in its time. It was BMWs first turbo car since the 2002.

Again like NAS...Im an n54 owner by choice, owned for 4 and half years now amd cant see myself selling it.

Is the n55 more reliable in terms of the SURROUNDING parts around the engine, I think so...

To the OP...you need to know whats your goals, are you going to mod it or stay stock, the n54 has way more modding potential then the n55, but has those surrounding items around the engine that must be sorted or at least checked on the cars history if owner / bmw got them done.

I think the problem is that everyone has their own definition of reliable, and even maintenance.

If you own some of these cars for long enough, you forget what you have replaced and what it cost, almost like the frog in the boiling water.

Some will spend 25k on "maintenance" and justify it by saying it will save you in the long run etc. I have seen me do it.

Compare a e46 330i to a 335i and there is a huge difference, especially at 200 000+ km.

That being said, I think a n54 is a costly engine to run compared to most other BMW engines.

Quite simply put N54's give shit when they get modded and under maintained, which seems to be the norm allot of the time.

My favorite one of them all is doing oil changes at "BMW recommended intervals" even though the car is modded and then wander why the turbos pop or the car starts smoking etc.

There are hundreds of videos online of people modifying their N54's and when they open the bonnet it looks like they used the car on set for the filming of mad max!!! and this is also VERY common in South Africa from what I have seen!

N54 has a few big ticket items that need to be replaced (HPFP, Injectors & water pump), but once replaced if you maintain the car and look after it, It should be good to you for a long time!
Not just America, all the LHD markets. The turbos were in the way of the RHD cars.
That said, the SA only e23 745i was way better.
