I am posting for the purpose of sharing a clean engine that has obviously enjoyed easy driving and very regular oil changes which did not coincide with BMWs recommended intervals.

Im sure the extra torque from the new seals makes a world of difference on the heavy girl. These pre facelift 528i's with their cast iron blocks will last forever and I also found that it having the 4spd auto makes the gearbox less busy upshifting/downshifting all the time in comparison to the later 5spd auto in the facelift models. Flash Gordon's one is a good testament to what you can expect from her for years to come.
I always enjoyed driving my mom's former '97 528i, such a comfortable daily driver and now 2 owners after my mom the car is still running beautifully close on 400 000km.

Moose you better make sure you keep this one!

Not sure of the year, but as far as I know the 5spd has the steptronic box whereas the 4spd has like a manual shift where you select the individual gears if you know what I mean?

The 4-speed auto was optional (not standard) on the earlier '98 model 528i's only, which were available with either a 5-speed auto or 5-speed manual as standard. From '99 the E39 never saw another 4-speed as far as I know.

The earlier 5-speeds came with or without Steptronic, also optional.
