Maintaining a 335i out of MP

So my 335i is now on 85 000km and starting it's 2nd year out of MP (MP expired end June 2014).

Costs for 1 year out of MP was R5 771 of which R4000 was for a new inlet camshaft. BMW SA picked up 2/3rd of cost as car was month out of MP. Then there was R1 771 for an oil leak around oil filter. Repairs done at Auto Atlantic. Considering that 1 year extension of MP was I think R12k I came out ok.

So far into 2nd year out of MP, car just had oil service, rear brake pads, coolant flush, tappet cover gasket and gear box software reset. Total price was R3450 at Reynolds auto care.

In comparison my E90 320i cost me average of R10k per year for the 3 years I drove it out of MP. This was though from 100 000 - 150 000km.

I'm on similar mileage and just had the same oil seal issue. I'm still on MP. Water pump packed up not long ago in first extension month. Thanks for sharing.

Waterpump, lpfp, coils, injectors and oil filter housing gasket i believe is the common issues. Im sure the more experienced guys can chime in tho:coolShake:

Hi man.... My 335 is sitting on 16000kms and still going strong, I'm not a super tech, but manage to do all the work on my own... I just recently fixed "the oil leak around the filter". In my case thankfully it was the common oil cooler housing gasket, costed R360 from Bmw just for the gasket, took me about an hour to replace that, with that I did an oil change, and bled the coolent out, as you loose some during that fix, I put in new coolent as well, did the pressure test and bled out all the air. Truth be told it was an ok job. I've had most of the common 335 issues and I've managed to overcome them, so honestly I wouldn't be to scared about keeping the car out of plan, I know where you're coming from, trust me I was really stressed when the car got close to the 100k mark and I was like literally running around looking to get out of the car, now I'm happy I didn't. It's been my daily driver since 12k and it's still going, one just needs to look after it that all. Shit does happen though so it's good to be prepared somehow.

I was initially scared when car went out of MP, but so far it has cost me less than what my 320i cost me.

The reason for my post was to maybe help other guys who might be scared to get a 335i out of MP. I think my cost so far have been more than reasonable.

Hope I am not jinxing myself :=):

Thanks for the info:clapper:

I'm in same boat regarding my 2011 e90 320d, motorplan is done next year August (millage is 80,000km )and I have 1 more year to pay and car will be fully paid up. So contemplating just keeping the car as I wont be owing anything on it but the fear of getting high maintenance cost worries me

I have always been told to never buy any turbo car out of motorplan, but although the later of my cars have all been turbo and no motorplan I took a chance with the purchase of my 335i.

4 days after collecting it started a misfire, luckily it was just one coilpack and nothing serious.

2 weeks later the waterpump packed up, I did all the work myself and parts came in around 9k.

Now I have an ABS DTC etc warning popping up, it is not sensor, and most of the time it is the Hydro pump, that can run anything from 6k 2nd hand or 30k new, and then still programming from bmw.

Luckily the turbos and clutch were replaced before I took delivery, so one less thing to worry about.

Costs are expensive out of MP, but for the car you get, I think its well worth it.

My o8 335 went out of motorplan last year January, currently standing on 130k.

BMW had already done all the usual recalls on it when i bought it in 2010, however out of MP a month and three injectors gave in for which BMW footed the parts bill and I only paid labour, 2 months out of MP water pump gave in, BMW graciously again paid parts and I paid labour. I recently serviced oil (Liqui Moly), new rear pads, sensor and this week front pads and sensor. Also had the water pipe above the radiator replaced with a aluminium pipe and then replaced the water coolant bottle all this i did myself. My costs since out of MP are around 9k including the labour on the work done out of MP as stated previously, so not ridiculous, except tires... there's a horrendous cost!

My brothers 08 330i is running at around the same cost. Off course all cars can be hit by a failure of any large part which in our case will be turbos, but unfortunately that's the case for many models and brands. Maintenance and also preventative maintenance is the key to keeping a car in good shape.

Driving it like you stole it everyday will also not help to make it last years.

Got two cars out of MP.

Having the 335 out of MP was a joyous occassion:rollsmile: modding galore.

Both cars have had minor repairs which i did myself.

I still do the normal oil services with the Bmw dealership to keep the service record up to date.

I have found 335 parts generally affordable and used parts at Bruce spares even cheaper if needed.

Other than the water pump which I suggest you change around 110k there isn't much to worry about.

And ABS Hydro Unit, which also seems to be a common problem.

Well I think I am a bit "lucky" The last 6 months of MP the following big ticket items were replaced:
1. Gearbox
2. Injectors
3. Water pump
4. Battery
5. Diff
6. Battery

Next month I intend giving Carbon Doctor a visit for a carbon clean.

Did I jinx myself

So yesterday after doing some shopping, I am two blocks away from my house standing at a stop street. As I pull away yellow icon pops on dash. While I am still figuring out what the icon means, it changes to red and I get "engine overheating" message and car goes into limp mode.

Thankfully by this time I am over the intersection and switch off immediately. At the stop street where I was standing there is a small puddle of anti-freeze followed by a steady stream of dots to where I cam to a standstill. Pop bonnet and I can see evidence of anti-freeze around water bottle, mostly at the bottom and some on engine but not much. My son and my neighbour pushed car to my driveway.

Left the car for a couple of hours and opened water bottle. There was still anti-freeze in it, below minimum level but not totally empty. Son and I pushed the car into garage and there was a small puddle of anti-freeze in the driveway where the car had been standing.

Looking at posts on net all indications are waterpump or thermostat failure. The waterpump was replaced in Feb 2014 under MP. I have done 18000km since then. Exactly a month ago car was in for service and anti-freeze was replaced.

Will get a flatbed tomorrow to tow car to Reynolds.

Sound like the leak is from the bleeder screw on the expansion bottle
Faizel is good he will sort it out

+1, if it were the water pump you would notice splatter surrounding the pump

While I was waiting for my son and neighbour to come push the car, it looked like a BMW convention :=): Random youngsters in 1 Series stopped to ask if "uncle was ok and needed help" :=): Warmed my heart to feel the spirit of BMW drivers.

One guy looked at the expansion tank and felt that the bleeder screw was overly tight. Also felt under the tank and said there is a big possibility the leak is from a pipe under the expansion tank as he could feel the anti-freeze their.

Would this not first give a low anti-freeze warning?
