if I owned one I would increase the oil cooling capacity so I could track it on 0w40

Yes.

But as I said in post #16, it will definitely consume a little more oil than normal, because of the ring/bore design. Especially with sustained high RPM applications

had a read :) to summarize it seems the issue stems from very tight clearance between the bearing crank and conrods... in this case a thinner oil will help

also BMW NA have approved 5w30 5w40 and 0w40 oils for this engine

unless there there is bottom bearing shell wear on an S65 with thinner oil I see no reason not to run it on a street car and it will be better for the engine

Ok excellent, so you and Peter are in agreement?

Thanks for checking up bud!

Just a little update on this. Ive been running the car on LM 0W40 for a few months now and have done around 2000km since the oil change. Right after the change and CBS reset, the level dropped from full to half in about 250km and has been sitting on the half mark since. So I'm happy to report that the car does not appear to use any oil

To be honest, I can't say. It's not something I consciously monitored before and after. So I suppose the answer is that if it made a difference, it wasn't big. But I'm feeling more comfortable having a thinner oil in there based on all the bearing discussions taking place, especially at cold starts.

I read the "official S65 bearing spec" document linked in this thread....so what does one do...avoid 08 and other early M3's...I looked at a convertible today...I have the VIN....anyone able to check out the history for me?

^^^ send me a PM

As far as 08's are concerned, I get the impression that you better off with an older car than a newer one because the older bearings have a lead coating on the bearings.
