The expansion tank is that colour due to age and not due to dirt as it was soaked and cleaned.

If I were to even think of putting it in the dishwasher my wife would have my testes for ear rings.

Looking great love that color scheme  Soaking the expansion tank with white vinegar will remove most of that crap inside :=):

I must still try this trick
You are brave.

will it be compromised?

I can underwrite that Mrs PrevanP will in all likelyhood compromise your future :) ....as to the bottle no it will not be compromised if you manage to sneak it in the dishwasher

Thread continuation, the M3 is now with me for the non motor related issues and boy there are many...Where to start?

Lets start on a bunch of parts to be fitted.

Reason for replacement glass.

Electrical issue, notice the key is out but ignition switch still in 1st position, this drains the battery in no time.

Underneath, where most of my time will be spent presumably.

Ghetto exhaust hanger.

Will be interesting getting this bolt out.

Lots missing, pork chops, air ducts, centre splash panel, hooter.

Missing a fastening bolt.

Simple fix.

Current rear shocks.

Front shocks, note sway bar end link mounting points, the replacement shocks don't have these, will make a plan.

At some stage 3.2lt headers were swapped on, pointless as they no different to 3.0lt headers bar the bungs for oxygen sensors, which these have been cut off anyway. Our SA market M3 3.0lt doesn't have oxygen sensors.

Possibly needs new crush washers and bolt.

Missing 10mm bolt.

Oil leak, I count 3 different silicon colours on this point, Drei Bond (clear), black silicon and grey silicon, none are working. Also note the cute little earth strap, lol.

Leak around/on the reverse light switch.

Insulation has collapsed onto propshaft and exhaust.

Cable tie came off the steering boot.

Exhaust and heat shield off.

Wrong nuts.

Collapsed insulation and the propshaft coupling says 1999.

Insulation started catching fire.

Wrong bolts and flimsy washers.

It needs a new bolt on the power steering pump Warren in all likely hood the threads have been stretched.
The alu washers were replaced

OR the mating surface on the pump may well have a nick and it may require some filling to get it clean?

Thank you, will put new bolt and washers on the list.
Gearbox is off, leaking quite badly. Also it looks like a E36 328i dual mass clutch and flywheel on here and not the single mass M3 original...

Reverse switch cable has been cut or damaged at some stage, probably just twisted together...Will look into it.

Front lower control arm mounts cracking, both sides.

Oily gearbox.

18mm.

Clutch.

2 sump bolts missing.

Main bolt and locating dowel missing.

What are the chances this was was in some suspension related smash given the tipped writing on there?

alot of the underneath components have the vehicle reg written on them, your assumption is very true.

The stock length of the clutch fork pivot pin is 20mm, this one is 18mm. Not a huge difference at all.

clearly it has had a hard life... quite normal to find one or two things like this but to have soo many on one car is not nice at all...

Im going to break them down into "can wait" vs "right now".

Cry now and cry later. Oh well atleast with 2nd hand cosmetic parts it does lessen the pain somewhat. Impressive work you are doing.

How does one get a deep groove in the middle of the friction surface? Weird.

I figured out the electrical issue, my first thoughts was the ignition switch was faulty but when I unplugged the switch the OBC and cluster stayed on, I then figured out that the violet wire was getting a constant +12V source from somewhere, pulled the glove box off and the dash under panel on the driver's side to look for possible causes, didn't see any. I then though about checking how the radio was installed and sure enough the problem appeared, PO stripped and twisted all the power wires together and covered them with insulation tape. I ripped out the horrible mess and re wired the radio. Electrical issue solved!

PO's dodgy wiring.

:praise::praise: Great work.

As for the owner, I have massive respect for you, I would have cut my losses after Peter's first assessment and called it quits by selling the car.

The perseverance you have displayed, I take my hat off to you.
