Bud there are not much options! but Gizmo is looking into building a bracket to make a type 188 diff fit that will be your cheapest option if he is finished! Why do you want to go the L/S route? Drifting??
We get awesome traction on open diffs up to 150kw at the wheels! even our E46 323i turbo 258kw 298nm has still got an open diff and traction is surprisingly good as he still manages 2.2s 60ft..

Put the video onto youtube & paste the link here

DE@NO has a 2005 320i & definatly has a normal diff, as he always does 1 wheel burnouts / spins

If you have a lock diff your wheels will want to turn the same speed the whole time! so if you turn even at 10km/h your one wheel will start to spin! no car comes out with a locked diff! just selectable lock diff eiter by switch or hubs on 4x4's!
L/S diffs has clutches on the in side and needs a certain amount of torque to lock both wheels!

open diffs can spin both wheels when they move in the same direction, but will not have a lockup when you spin around a corner or doing a donut! best way to test is do some donuts and if you can do it around a cone in the road or around a pole and keep facing the cone and keep your front bumper in a radius of 30cm of the cone you do in fact have an L/S diff! no way in hell an open diff can do that!

on grass its hard to say coz i drift my brothers non L/s 325i on dirt and grass.. can you get the same effect on tar?
try on a dry road and check if you have a small or big turning circle..
I think only the E46 M3 had the L.S unit but used the type 210 diff not std E46.. i dont think that any other E46 came out with an L/S unit thats why the E46 Quaffe diff is R10 000 more than the other bmw range!
