Looking to buy a 1 Series

I'm thinking of selling my wife's E46 320i which is heavy on petrol, and staying with BMW to go for a 1 Series. I saw a 2-door 116i yesterday in traffic - what are they like? Is there also a 118i or does the range go straight to the 4-cylinder 120i? I don't want a diesel, and I need the back seat to fold down -is this standard? Any advice will be welcome - I can spend around R100k

passenger space is "ok" for a car its size, boot space is not really that good though, going from a 3 to a 1 i think you will miss the space.

that said, i think the 1 series looks really good and i did enjoy my 120d.
i dont know what the fuel consumption is like on the smaller petrols though, maybe somebody with one will be able to comment.

I've got a 118i auto at the moment that i am using until my car is repaired...my first opinion on the car when i got, BMW should be ashamed of themselves selling this car for so much, but I have to admit, the car has grown on me, so much so that I havent driven any of my other cars in over 3 weeks.

What sort of fuel consumption are you getting with the E46 320i? Is it the 2.0 ltr pre-facelift or the later 2.2 ltr facelift model? How much more economical will a 116i or 118i be compared to this?

ECU shows 15.2L/100kms. 6 cylinder autos are very thirsty. My 330 auto sits on 16, but is always in heavy traffic

My mom has a 2009 118i. It's a great car for a lady although rear visibility absolutelty sucks. The floor at the rear is also fairly high so its sort of uncomfortable to stay seated on longer trips (2hrs plus). It handles really well!!! We had a mk5 gti in our family and I believe that BMW feels and handles better than the golf. Fuel usage is ok, not as low as one would expect but i suppose it's how you drive. I'm a firm believer, if you get a BMW it must be a 6 potter, but that's just me.

i recently got a 2007 120d.

worst average consumption so far has been 8.5l/100km. thats the best consumption i got in my golf gti that i traded in for the bmw. the worst average i got when really belting the golf was 16.5l/100km.

+100 for the handling, feels so sure footed even i get a little brave. very solid build in my opinion, everything is nice and tight, no rattles and squeaks to speak of. love the fat steering wheel, and the tightness of it. my old man has a sentra 1600i, and OMG that steering is so light it scares me.

what i dont understand is why you dont want diesel? its got the power you want, and the consumption you want?

That's pretty high for a 320i, even automatic I would think - depends on how it is driven and what type of driving we are talking about. Both my car and my Wife's 320i CAN be very heavy on fuel or fairly light - short frequent trips from cold eats fuel in particular with mine, so once up to temperature and at decent speeds she sips very nicely. The econometer on both cars react almost the same under the same conditions although where mine differs from the 320i is that mine take a lot more convincing to come down and below the 10 l/100 km instant consumption in traffic and so on!

Is automatic a must? Just by opting for a manual car can save a little on fuel usage, but still many factors can change this. By no means am I against the 1 Series - was actually very seriously considering spending a bit more and getting a 120i with lower mileage for my Wife. But my original plan was to get her a nice E46 with a manual 6I in particular, and glad I did so.

So some things to thing about, rather the "devil" you know - so much knowledge and DIY solutions for E46's, especially here, but these cars are somewhat predictable. Known problems are well documented and in most cases easily fixed. Then with the 1 Series you have the whole RFT's and no spare wheel for your Wife to battle with. Some complain about very heavy steering and quite harsh rides in some cases - this is also down to personal taste. Even my E90's steering is a tad heavier that the E46 - get into my Isuzu DC and have to consciously remind myself that I am now working with super-light steering even though we are in HMS Isuzu, and try no to bliksem the thing onto its side while turning... At the end I think, if you get anything from a 116i to a 120i with a manual gearbox, or even an E46 with a manual gearbox you will already have less fuel usage, but any of these cars with an automatic and I reckon you will be back to square one, if that makes sense.

BTW, didn't know your 330i was automatic!!

Thanks for the input. I've abandoned the idea and will keep her 320. The car is still in awesome condition and I know it so well
