Looking at buying a BMW 525i 2002

If you are talking about 45Cars (you mentioned 45 Autos), i would suggest stay away. When i bought my E39 528i from them 5 years ago they were all promises about fixing stuff for me that was bothering me and when i phoned the next week to arrange when and how they were going to fix the problems on the car, the owner would not even speak to me even though his salesman took the phone to him telling him i wanted to speak to him. His argument was he had given me discount and that was that. That was not his argument on the Friday that i bought the car - never was the discount mentioned as a reason that he was not going to fix the car. When i left on the Friday with the car he was my "biggest pal", but the next week he did not want to know me. I later found the folder in the car with the invoice for what they had paid for the car when they bought it from the previous owner and saw they had made a lot of money on my deal, even after giving me discount. Anyway, fixed the things on the car myself. If you do find something nice there, and you want to buy it, make sure you get every promise in writing.

A good friend of mine had a 2003 E39 525i auto at the time i had the 528i and i often drove his car on the road (Hermanus - Cape Town) and mine drove nicer. Did not change down as often as his 525 because of the extra torque of the 2.8 l engine. Have always wanted to try the 530i and would suggest you get that. I now have a 530d after i had a 540i and must say that the d is almost as nice as the 540. At the pumps it is a different story altogether. If you are handy with spanners i would suggest you look at the 530d and do the egr delete, cat delete and most important, the swirl flaps!! Economy wise, taken over three 5000km road trips involving mostly open road travelling at a genuine 120kph, the 528i auto gave 11,7km/l, the 540i auto gave 9,9km/l and the 530d auto gave 15km/l (the 528 and 540 i was alone in the car and with the diesel we were 4 with bootfull load of luggage)

i dont know any dealers im from pmb :) so it wont help...

the thing is you have a 1.4l runx and you want a big 3l bm the ball is in your court because any dealer would rather have the runx on the floor right now than the bm so you should be able to get a good deal...

you have to let them know that you not stupid and you know they want the car...

Yeah I know what you're saying!
I figured the 525 would be a huge step up from the 1.4 RunX. Shot for all the advise, it's much appreciated!

Will take her for a test drive hopefully tomorrow and see what happens :)

brimes had a 525i so he has spent the money, take his advice, he now drives a potent 540 e39. I was interested in a 525i msport 02, the kit alone will sell the car, its like a drug and will just consume u! It downchanges all the time, low torque. 530i much better and fuel economy very similar, 530i or 530d thats my advice!

stay away, mtech kit not original cos steering is not sport and rear bumpers some make up 1! there are 540is on junkmail 02 models around R100k and stock, 540is are a little nose heavy and not as agile as the sixes, very beastly and highway kings, dont drive 1 if u not looking for 1 or not into the v8, you will set a new benchmark and be completely sold!!

Managed to knock the guys down to R65k.
What we thinking here?

This changes things up a bit IMHO.
Remember, this car isn't the kinda car I wanna drive around super fast - just a cruiser :)

i dont know... if it had a bigger engine i would say go for it, but a 2.5l auto... i dont think it will push the load very comfortably... also you cant forget the damage... i just think you will find a better deal...

Power is my only real concern at this stage, but insurance gets pricey for me with cars more powerful :(

if you cant get a bigger engine because of insurance then maybe its a good idea... before you drive a more powerful one :)

Haha, true that bud! It's a step up from the 1.4 if you look at it from any angle.
Gonna try give her a proper test drive tomorrow and make a decision from there. Will keep you guys updated :)

Thanks for all the advise moranor, it's really appreciated - and is taken to heart!

I wish I could say yes to a 540i... but I can't.
Insurance will take most of my salary on a 540i :( Which can't happen...

OK, so I've taken the plunge after a bit of price negotiating :)
Insurance is 100% sorted, managed to run a straight swap because the RunX has decent mileage. Woohoo!!

Now it's down to road worthy, registration papers etc etc etc - and the BMW is all mine. Too excited to get my hands on my first BMW  Hopefully picking it up late tomorrow or on Saturday. Will post up some pics as soon as I get her in the garage!

Beeeeeeeeeg smiles
