Good read with clean comments! Like it, Thanks for the post

Like I said I am happy with the F30 considering the price range brand new, it's a mass manufactured car for the masses and is the most popular model they have - it's not built to last but I suspect it will.. :=):

70Kms and no serious mechanical faults to report: get in, start the car and drive to cape town - which is exactly what you want regardless of the cars annoying faults..

Since the economic downturn and accountants took over and its all about the numbers now, who has the most models and who has the best fuel economy figures, ect. Because BMW want to out-do the competition on economy figures they have made radical changes to their vehicles to reduce air and parasitic drag, less exterior trimmings and aerodynamic under panels are used to bring drag coefficient numbers down. Power steering pumps, aircons and water pumps which run off the crankshaft produce parasitic drag on the motor reducing its fuel efficiency and this is why BMW replaced them with electric components instead, direct injection is also now the norm but with all these advances come their inherent pitfalls. The cost of replacing an electric water pump or aircon pump or power steering pump versus its older mechanical type is crazy and puts the part cost way out of anyone's budget, we talking about a 400-800% price difference in parts here...Direct injection, although a great fuel saver is very costly when it goes wrong, high pressure fuel pumps do go bad and cost the earth, ask any X35i owner. Due to there being no fuel to lubricate the intake tract in a modern direct injection motor carbon builds up at a rapid rate chocking the motor and killing performance and economy, I have personally seen in the BMW workshops how bad this carbon build-up can get, even with as little as 40 000km. Fortunately a very clever man named George Smooth aka Carbon Doctor saw the lack of facilities in this country for carbon build-up and imported the expensive equipment to cater for the demand, if he weren't around then what would you do? All those guys with modern BMWs with direct injection should go pay George a visit and let him show you with his endoscope how carbon-caked your internals really are!:fencelook:

Yep! @Gizmo is right, carbon build-up is a nightmare.

Manufacturers don't have a solution for it, let alone acknowledge it. When the engine is all choked up, they recommend changing the manifold... and we all know it's not small change. :nonono:

If you do really love your, George Smooth is your man, in fact the only man, for the carbon job (again, @Gizmo is right). It will set you back in the region of R6 000, give or take.

Small price to pay for piece of mind, if you ask me.

I couldn't agree more with most of what you guys have said here...
Definitely miss the late 80's and 90's in terms of cars they seemed more special.. just my opinion but that said new generation M cars are fantastic as well super fast and powerful as reports are now coming out of tests on the M4 and M3.

My Daily drive is an e90 LCI 320i manual exclusive pack still under motorplan
It lacks torque but it gives great economy, smooth to drive, love the gear shift and chassis feels pretty much as a bmw should o yes and for my needs loads of boot space.

I've owned two e30 325i's(modded) and a 98 e36 M3, also drove plenty of e46's and an F30.

As was said previously they all have unique but still BMW characteristics that we love, guess with the newer 1's we have to either embrace the new changes or stick to older cars.

I love the new 1's but I love the older BM's even more and recently acquired a 97 M3 to give me some of the older BMW M magic, does it deliver?
Hell yes!!!!
... but I would grow tired of it as a daily drive that's for sure.
Stiffer suspension, hardcore clutch.....etc

my 2c...

thanks dudes.

My two cents worth.

Firstly IMO Gizmo is a guy who shoots of his mouth without knowing better. Sorry I had to state this up front as this is not the first thread where he feels E46 was the best thing since sliced bread.

Im not attacking you here Gizmo but more a reply to state theres owners out there like myself that have owned every 3 series from E30 to current F30/F32 , including the ///M range in this segement. We choose to do these upgrades as we feel its a improvment in the vehicle range. Completely different to the opinion you have.

Surely after owning and driving the entire range we would have a opinion to base some sort of logic on. When i use the word range , i mean theres guys just like me that have gone through E30, E46, E90, E92, F30, F32

Passing negative comments on a car a person has never owned or driven daily in every possible condition is just plain down silly IMO.

What I would rather comment and say instead is that we are all different. Some of us may love a E46 whilst the rest may love a F30. We are entitled to this freedom of choice.

This does not mean one car is better than the other or vice versa.

I want to say more but rather end with saying as long as its a BM. Thats all that matters.

:sorry:

Now now mos1ted, looks as though you are stirring again calling me out...How many times are you going to be banned from this forum only to come back with a new name and cause crap again and again...I will never forget your personal threat towards me and my family...EVER!!!

I have never said the e46 is the best thing since sliced bread ever, infact I prefer the e36 over the e46. Once again you're way off the mark as usual...

Don't really know where to reply. On this thread or the other.

Shaun you say you're not attacking Gizmo, but your previous sentence is exactly that. An attack.

So you've owned all the 3 Series models so yes maybe you do know a little about the cars and how they have progressed and improved or not improved, whatever. Thats brilliant, I'd love for you to impart that knowledge with us? What about a thread chronicling your ownership of these cars... Likes/dislikes? Common issues you had? Would make a brilliant buyers guide for a prospective 3 Series owner. :dunno:

Lets remember that this is public domain and everyone is allowed to voice an opinion. If Gizmo believes that the E46 is the best thing since sliced bread, which as he himself has stated he didnt say. Then he is within his rights to say that. Its like I think the E39 is the best BMW they've made. I'm also not a fan of newer BMW's AT ALL... I do think my E39 will outlive the newer models. We can argue about this until we're both blue in the face, I wont budge

This (and the F30 thread) have been good threads thus far and I really don't want to close either thread. Lets keep it clean guys. If you have issues. Take it to PM, we don't need to see whatever issues you too have between each other on the open forum.

I'm keeping my eye on both threads and will close/tidy up if I feel it gets out of hand...

Yes I agree all opinions are valued and I don't see anything wrong with this Post. There is no swearing or fighting just opinions/small debate. No need to BANNN anyone in this post. Any other personal issues you guys can always PM each other and keep it out of this thread.

In all respect I agree if you have not had a specific model BMW as a daily drive then dont shoot it down for then you are shooting from the hip because you think you own the best model in the world. Just my opinion and not attacking anyone.

The E39 being the.best... Now.u r stating.facts.sir... Seriously though alot of 3 Series guys for a few reasons shy away from socaller bigger cars..thing is a E39 "looks" big but doesn't drive big at all. Most for instance won't know that the E39 sports.a all aluminium suspension.. This is a weight saving strategy. The entire E39 5er weighs.like 150kg or.so.more.than E46...

This is GIZMOs take on anything after the E46. He is entitled to his opinion. Other users out there like myself certainly will not agree to the DOWNGRADE as he states. Oh wait he has owned this cars , my bad , its not reliable as he states !

More and more horror stories coming out of BMW's reverse engineering these days, glad Im sticking to my e36 and e46 guns! I feel sorry for you guys who downgraded to the E90 and F30, it sure does leave a bitter taste in the mouth when you find out your favourite car manufacturer cannot build a quality reliable car or be able to fix 'em any more.

This thread suddenly went south at a certain point.

Moderators, I would appreciate it if you would identify the first post of a personal, negative nature, and delete it, and all connected posts from this thread.

I spent quite a bit of time and effort on this. I respected the thread that prompted me creating this thread enough, to not post my thoughts on that thread, and possibly de-rail it. Please guys extend to me the same courtesy?
