Intake Cam Cover

Out of curiosity I would like to purpose of the camshaft cover on BMW M50/52 engines, I have posted also on facebook and I thought I must ask the Guru's here. Please see attached pic for reference. Thanks

My guess would be to cover the cams from flicking oil when the oil filler cap is removed?

The ventilation system connects on that side also the splash cover may also help prevent some oil from entering the pipe
