Whether its faster or not-- Not that again ... If it ain't got no ///M badge next to it series ( eg ///M1,3,5,6) then it won't be featured as the greatest M cars if all time.
Do you actually think that in the BMw museum in Germany they have the M stall featuring all the Ms, then next to it they have the 135i on a rotating platform saying " but this one was faster than the M3 Around the Ring"

Owners of the 135 must accept that they have a very cute 1 series hatch with a boot, which in M form looks pretty butch and accept that it's pretty fast.
Fanatics - how often have you had to turn you head to give an M car asecond look... Even its parked off it looks as though its travelling at a 100 mph. There's reason for that. It's an M.

Now, re our colleague going to test drive a car which has been dragged every day and twice on Sunday. The tell tale signs of a ragged car are in front of you.
You asked about whether to go ahead with a second hand m3 purchase and what to look out for.
The after market exhaust..with Cat deletes
The tatty look of the car
The oil sweat tells u that this car wasn't serviced as often as it should have been

WALK AWAY before you spend you hard earned cash on a lemon.
Have you heard the saying " you can't polish a Turd"- if you get it, no matter how much of of love u give it ( polishing , servicing etc ) it's still going to be a turd.
Top tip: in an M, always look for a stock car

Yeah no i never even went to test drive it...just a quick look on Autotrader and youll see tons of examples with less km's, more features for less money than this "turd"

Wrt the 135/335i being better than the M3...who really cares how faster you are than me in an M...its still an M3...as Jerez said, sad part is guys with E92 335's are making their cars to look like M3's, lol.

The heart of the M is the engine...never again will N/A's feature like this, only n supercars!

I've been thinking hard and long and looked at my finances loooooong and it didn't change...I can only afford a used e92 M3.:biglol:

I've never wanted an M3 like I want an e92 M3...they just speak to me, until I actually get into one I don't know how I will react. I've seen interior pics and its bland...but hey, its got 309kw on tap and that's what I'm after, a true sports car.

I like that I'm seeing prices of R399k - R450k and they generally have in the region of 50000km-90000odd km's.

Now my question to M fanatics are - what's wrong with buying an M3 that's out of its motorplan? Do they just wait untill the ECU reads 100000km and then go BOOM or give all other components the go ahead to start giving issues?

I mean not everyone can buy new M3's, someone has to buy these used versions...

I am seriously considering getting one next year when both my babas are out of their car seats...my wife does not really like the M3 but she will...she will...she will. She gave me the go ahead as long as my debt is paid off next year I can persue my M3 dream.:bravo:

So, should I find one that I like next year what is there to look out for?
I don't really care for petrol consumption as the car will only be used once or twice in the week and then weekends.

Extended waranties - how much are they for an M3
I don't pay insurance - my work pays for my vehicle insurance so no worry there.
Maintenance - what to look out for?
Software - is it true that once the ECU is touched BMW will know?

Then lastly...who on here will purchase a used high km M3...if yes, your reasons, if no, your reasons...

thanks.

Hi ALFA ;

I understand completely where you comin from. My first experience of takin an E92 for a Test Drive , was an M3 that had a Schnitzer exhaust system fitted .

O M W , i was in my element .

The way i described it to a friend , is that it kept remindin me of a Ferrari. He said i was right , 'cos Ferrari is V8 N A engine.

On the topic of old M3 , theres absolutely nothin wrong with it , i have an E46 M3 ( which is for sale btw ) , i bought the car out of plan and i mus say , its been an absolute pleasure ( i t o maintenance )

Dont be afraid it , once a month , check your wheel alignment and whilst the car is up on the ramp , go through the undercarriage with flashlight .
This is pre-emtive maintenance.

And lastly . . . " Enjoy Responsibly " Time and Place for everything . An M3 is all about discipline .

Good luck . . .

Just my 2c worth regarding lowering your standards to an E46 M3..... In my opinion, this isn't lowering your standards at all. The engine in the E46 won international engine of the year multiple times (6 if I am not mistaken, in a row) and as many have mentioned, it is pretty bullet proof. I agree on the buying a car as stock, if it's been modded, I would have a good think about it.
The E46 was and still is a stunning car, how BMW got 252kw out of a stock standard straight 6 3.2l is amazing, and the car is wonderful to drive and to live with. I have to admit I was very tempted to buy another one, the E90 just made more practical sense for me cos of the 4 doors and kids etc. But I am absolutely smitten with my E90, and the previous owner is a member on this forum and he definitely looked after the car. It has a few MINOR signs of wear and tear, but nothing you wouldn't expect, and for a car that turns 5 this year, it turns heads every where and looks brand new (when it's clean....thanks JHB thunderstorm yesterday....). I have had my E90 for just under three weeks now, and stand and look lovingly at it every day. It is awesome in traffic (unfortunately my daily driver) and once used to the gearbox is simple to negotiate. After my RS4, this car is absolute heaven, and my RS4 was a fantastic car. You buy an M3 because you are passionate about cars, not because you have to.
As far as the x35 is concerned, I don't care if it's faster,it is just not an M, never has been, never will be. You will not regret owning an M3,whether it be an E36, 46 or 9x, everyday you will be grateful for being part of a group of owners of these amazing cars. That's why I ditched my RS4, I just missed driving an M too much, and I don't regret it at all. Look after it, and it will look after you, simple as that.

If I may also gooi my 2c…

I own a Z3 M Coupe (S50) and it might not be as brutal or sophisticated as the modern M’s, but, I can confirm one thing.. When I drive it, I know I am in a different beast, it sort of speaks to me if you know what I mean, Something in the lines of, HEY F(^&K NUTS, GROW A PAIR!!! And it is at that moment I forget about all the other crap like the VANOS is rubbish and the valves are so noisy it sounds like a diesel…

Yes these car require maintenance, maybe a little more than other cars and they are expensive to repair… but when they work, and it will, you will have the time of your life.

Get the best one you can find and you will not regret buying an M, ever.
