HID Adapters

Anyone fitted these or seen them in any local shops. It should be an adapter with a lens that focuses xenons properly, if you install an aftermarket xenon kit in a halogen housing. I'm curious to see if it's decent ...

There isn't a pic of the other (lens) side and I've mailed the guy but no response yet.

With the ridiculously high price of cheap aftermarket "projector" lights, it may be better to install this in an OEM halogen housing with a xenon kit, assuming they have a decent lens with proper cut-off/focusing.

To me that just looks like an adapter so you can fit something like a D2s bulb or something to standard reflector bowls, but with that low quality pic it could be pretty much anything.

I've seen HID kits in the E90 halogen housing...

Its earth shatteringly bright and blinding. The halogen bowl is just too big.

:sorry:

Completely agree. Hence the reason for proper projection and me looking at these options if they are decent.

My preference would be OEM xenons, but at R8k to R10k a set ... let's say I'm looking at more cost effective options, but would never put a xenon kit in a normal halogen housing.

Been scouting around on the net and it appears that the following does exist as per pics below:

The type of cut-off I'm aiming for (RHD version though):

The biggest challenge is that I cannot find them locally yet. It seems that most of the guys who do xenon retrofits locally aren't too bothered with a proper beam cut-off and don't bring in decent kits with projector lens (yet).

Will keep everyone updated on what I can find. In any case, it will be a while before I get around to doing this as my E90 has about 6000KM of motorplan left (which should be around 6 months) before I start experimenting with the lights ... in the meanwhile, will continue the search, but if anyone does find a decent lens projector as per the pics above, please post details.

Can't see the second and third pics, stupid imagecrap.

Projectors like that (1st pic, make for a proper retrofit, these adapters posted on the gum gum, I have my doubts....for one thing you need a certain distance between the bulb and the lens and I doubt you could do it in something as small as those adapters.

Best is just to import there projectors, the are a quite a number of different one you could go for that are specifically intended for retro-fitting, got myself a two sets of projectors from lightwerkz during their black friday special earlier this year, still haven't done anything with them yet.

Yep, I think the ones currently on Gum are not the right ones. May also end up importing a pair if I don't find one, as I already have a xenon kit, just need the projectors.

Cool, and don't let motorplan stop you, you might as well get a spare set of e90 light and start experimenting, so that you can get rid of the candles the moment motorplan is out.

Oh and I tested the ones that I ordered back when I got the, this is what the cutoff looks like:

+1 on experimenting with a spare set of lights. Will start scavenging the scrap yards from next month for a set of OEM halogen lights - I would hope there is little demand for them, so they should be reasonable compared to a OEM xenon set.

That's a pretty decent cut-off on those lens

Yeah might be able to find them cheap, of course the real bonus would be to just find a set of e90 xenons. The was a guy selling a set of them on the gum a while back but he wanted R5500 per light, absolute madness.

look at my GSXR HID projector retrofit thread.

Morimoto's + E46r shrouds will work a treat in the e90 housing

Just be sure to get the D2S variant of those projectors, as there is also a type that is H1, personally I think it is better to get then for bulb type that is xenon standard cause you can more easily find.

as for shrouds I would personally rather go for something that retains the OEM look.

Been thinking about that too.

Most of the reasonably priced kits come in H7 format, so I won't have to change the bulb holder too.

However, the OEM stuff is D2S. But OEM ballasts are going to be quite expensive.

So still investigating all the options ...

You can get D2S HID kits as well, that would be what I go for and similar projectors as you can easily buy bulbs for them separately.

Interesting, don't really seem to have a very wide selection of projectors, unless you want AE's.

Also not a lot of info about the the products, but that is typical to SA sites.

I had those adapters on my E46, worked well with adjusting. I never had an issue with the Xenons being too bright for oncoming cars, i guess the laminx helped cut the brightness a bit.

Where did you get it from? Also, any plans on upgrading your E90 lighting?

Got them from a buddy of mine in DBN, he does vehicle lighting and other car accessories. Let me know if you want his number, i will PM you.

Yep, i am going down to dbn in Jan, so my buddy will be doing the HID's and LED's all around for me. :joy:
