Help this 18 year old choose his BMW

Allright.
Sights are set on an E39.
Is there someone out there that could list all the trim levels of the South African e39? facelift and pre-facelift ?

That would make my day!

trim levels will vary according to client spec so its very difficult question to answer.
Each car will have a BMW history - if u get the Vin and speak to your local dealer he will give you its history and what it was specked with from the factory.
but here is a help... http://www.automobile-catalog.com/

That touring sounds tasty. I like both the e39 and e46, but my experience says go for the e39. It's one hell of a good car, doubt you would regret it. :)

528i or 530i ?

either of them in manual as well as facelifted would be nice

When exactly did south africa receive the facelifted e39 ? 2001?

How difficult is it to change the front bumper and get hold of angel eyes for a pre-facelift ?

Thanks guys

528i is pre-face-lift, 530i is face-lift. Around 2001, yes. Forget about changing bumpers or lights afterwards, it is cheaper to buy a car with the equipment you want...

I'd stay away from a high-mileage diesel if I were you.
It's your first car - you don't want to spend big money on replacing the turbo when it goes.

E39 530i is a fantastic car and that 3.0L 6-pot lump is very reliable.
E46 323i is also a nice option in that price range.

the 323i is great till the subframe rips :mmm:
if you get a diesel make sure you have enough to replace the turbo if it goes and also budget to blank off swirl flaps...

maybe just settle for a 528 manual ?
Why did bmw make the 528 may I ask ? was it for those that wanted more than the 525 but not the 540 ? because there was not a 535 in the e39 am I right ?

An extra 300cc's doesn't sound like that much more, what is it there for ? fun?

Pre-LCI there was the 523i and 528i, with the LCI (facelift), they changed them to 525i and 530i

Howsit mann, can throw around cars without knowing more details is kinda pointless..

Hows about listing what the main uses of the car will be, driving conditions most of the time(traffic or no traffic), distance travveled each day, how long u plan on keeping the car, ure age for insurance purposes, category car will fall into for ure age, etc.

From there a suggestion can be made and an informed decision can be taken.

A list of pro's and cons of diesel vs petrol.

A list of what you want out of the car in terms of luxuries, what you need and what you dont.

Used Diesel:
Pros:
1.Lower Fuel Usage
2.Huge amounts or torque
3. not affected as much by altitude.
feel free to add to the list.
Cons:
1. was car filled up with 50ppm diesel or 500ppm? u will never know and as such cannot know what condition the parts internally are in.
2.The way a diesel engine works requires much stronger parts, however when these fail they are pricer to replace.
3.Longevity of turbo cars is less then that of petrol.
4.more frequent service intervals.
5.diesel costs more then petrol.
6. Sounds Horrid when old.
7.Smokes when old.
8. feel free to add to the list.

used petrol:
Pros:
1.Great performance at the coast.
2.no lag!
3.engine longevity much greater on non turbo car
4. less frequent service intervals
5.more fun
6.Sounds great always.
7. please feel free to add to the list.

Cons:
1. higher petrol usage.
2. please feel free to add to the list.

Please do not take offence to the following advice. You are 18 and a student, spend 20 grand and buy a 1.3 something. What you need is a frugal, roadside repairable vehicle that you wouldn't get a heart attack over when someone scratches it at the club or at the dorms. Just advice.

na james... i agree with you on the fuel story, but as far as im concerned life is to short to spend it in a shitbox...
and im getting better fuel consumption on my 323i than i got on my 1.6 polo...
any 20k car is going to break or get stolen...
im also finding the bmw parts are actually not that expensive...

the way i see it is:
you either buy a tazz and hate life because you have to waste money on this piece of rubbish
or you get a car you love... enjoy it and then least when it breaks you get something for the money
