Hi there

I have a BMW 318 2001 e45 Automatic

My car dos not want to crank. All the lights on the dashboard goes on except for the Manual/Automatic (steptronic) light. The one that indicates P, N, D.... The gear-lever is released and i can change the gears so there don't seem to be a problem with the key/ignition. The transmission did go into protection mode before it died but I was driving around with it for two weeks. On the day my car died i jumped a buddy of mines car. When I wanted to start my car again, it refused to crank theres no sound or nothing/ no movement from anything. I checked all the fuses and every things fine. The car-doors open and function normally when I use the remote.

Please, please, please help.

could it not be the sensor that indicates the Neutral (N) or Park(P) mode, as the car wont allow any cranking, when it is not "sensed" to be in either of these positions ???

Have you tried a different key?

This happened to me, my key was faulty . Used my spare and the car started.

Check battery at local battery specialist

Was thinking battery but just a question, if all the dash lights are glowing normally it would indicate that there is power and it would attempt to crank or starter would click?

If you say you jump started a buddies car, how did you do it, via the terminals in the engine bay or directly on the battery? I have heard of things blowing if directly on the battery - apparently they (BMW) suggest that the cars electronics can be damaged.....

Just a thought as I'm no expert either....

If u jumped ur buddy's car and didn't switch on any power consumers Ie demister or headlights.. the power spike could possibly blow control units...

Hey guy's thanks for the replies. lol my internet also died for a day, thats why i only reply now.

I replaced th battery with a new Willard and still the same thing happened. Now that you mentioned the sensor. the spedo did act weird, ie it would indicate I'm traveling at 40 km/h while standing :smashScreen:. it seems that somehow the computer is not picking up the gearbox or sum-thing. how do i fix the sensor?

i appreciate all you intel. you sound much better than the sandmechanics ive been speaking to. raise: so please assist if you can

Have the codes read via the OBD port before putting any cash into the car so you don't go spending funds fixing stuff that isn't broken.

I have to agree with the comments above, it does sound like some control units bit the dust. The fact that your cluster is showing that you are doing 40k/hr is a dead giveaway.

Where are you based?

Remember the cluster is a control unit itself (kombi) it gets its speed from the dme which gets signal from the dsc. . So could be a problem with either one.. I doubt it's the cluster cos the car doesn't need a signal from the kombi to start.. I think it could be the dsc cos u mentioned it not picking up park..
