Update: Private Track Day at Red Star Raceway
I've been meaning to post this update for some time now but just couldn't find the time so i've decided to just post it with whatever details i have on hand... Unfortunately this excludes the footage from the track sessions as that was captured on different cameras...
We had the opportunity to attend a private track day at Red Star Raceway on the 18th OCT 2018. The weekend before the Trackday, We started out prepping the cars, checking the essentials, Fluid levels, Brakes, suspension, tyres.ect and in my car, i pulled off the Intake and cleaned everything including Plenum, Throttles, ICV. Once we were happy that Both cars were in good shape, we then packed two crates, one with tools (jack, hand tools, wheel choks) the second crate with all the fluids, Oils, water, Octane.ect . We also decided that since there wasn't much boot space, we would leave the Semi's at home and run the cars on our street tires as we were not going out there to set records but rather enjoy the cars, the track and how they all work together.
The morning of 18 Oct 2018
We get up early, grab the crates, load them into the car, do a last minute check to ensure we have not forgot anything important and we set off, 10 minutes later we onto the freeway and moving... until we get to the Glen where traffic is almost at a standstill and we crawl past the accident and get going again, finally around 8:15am we arrive at Red star, the first thing i could remember thinking was "WOW this place is amazing and out here in the middle of nowhere!!!"
We drive in and then start to see the banners for the Private Trackday, to our surprise it was a Mayfair Gearbox and Diff Track day! We go through to registration and sign up, then directed to the pit area, we located our spot and setup camp. After Drivers briefing, we went back to the pits and met up with Dylan who is super knowledgeable when it comes to these events so he helped us get ready for our session. Thanks again Buddy!!!
So before our first session, we had a chance to walk around the pits and check out all the cars racing on the day... There were Skylines, 350 and 370 Z's, Ford ST's and RS's, GTI's, Super Bikes and an open class full of track monsters! A wide selection of different makes and models could be seen. we went up to the grand stands to watch the cars go around the track and learn as much of it as i possible could before actually going out... I remember watching a 350Z take off in front of me but after a bit he went off into the distance and i could hardly see it anymore, that's when i though, WTF , how long is this freaking lap!!
Then we heard the announcer call our class into the pit lane, so we jump in, strap up, gloves on, helmet on and off we go, the first 3 laps learning the braking zones, corners, ect and then i decided to push a bit harder on the 4th lap and at one point i looked down on the long straight and was doing 180km/h , WHAT!!!! i then did a cool down lap and went back into the pits to let the car rest. Had a look at the times and i achieved a best lap of 2:36:xxx in that session.
The second session... Each time we would go out in groups of 5 or 6 cars so there wasn't much traffic on the track. this Session went a little better, I made very slight changes to things like tire pressures and dampening and went out, starting with a warm up lap, 3 hard laps and a cool down lap. at this point I became comfortable with the car and the track and managed a decent 2:30:570 ... a decent improvement which i was happy with...
We then broke for lunch and a lekker braai was prepared for everyone... we all ate, drank and relaxed before going out again...
The last session.... By now the car felt good, i had fine tuned the tire pressures and suspension settings so the only thing left was to improve on, was myself... We hear them announce our Class so we went out to the pit lane and while was i was waiting there, a spectator came up to me and asked if he could be a passenger to which i humbly agreed. This young guy , Jason, ran into the pits, borrowed a helmet from someone and jumped in... We went out onto the track, starting with a warm up lap, 3 hot laps and then a cool down lap... Jason was having the time of his life, he didn't expect the Z4 to be so quick on the track and we had a good chat during the warm up and cool down laps... I really pushed the car as hard as the tyres and brakes would let me this time... After the session we go back into the pits, leave the cars to cool and go check the times. I ended the day with a incredible 2:28:405 which i was happy with and that's where we decided to call it a day and head on home... Nathan also enjoyed his M3 on the track and we learnt a lot on the day.. a truly unforgettable experience which we are thankful for the opportunity to attend free of charge.
At this moment I dont have access all the pics and vids that we took on the day but here is a quick clip..
