Guibo rubbing on Selector Rod?

Hi Gents...Ive had it with my stupid e36 :smashScreen:. one thing after the next it seems.

Is it possible for the guibo to rub against the selector rod?

For those who dont know, I recently swapped in a ZF gearbox. It uses the larger diameter guibo. When I reverse, these a squeaking noise. Somewhat sounds like metal to metal contact. When going forward, there's no noise when I accelerate but as soon as i let off the throttle theres a horribly loud squeaking noise.

I got under the car last night and checked the entire propshaft for marks and signs of contact and found none. When jacked up I can turn the wheels and the prop - no noise...no rubbing. Checked the guibo and found that the selector rod is very close to the guibo. Popped the car into reverse, and it gets even closer. Theres no obvious marks on the guibo though.

So back to the question...is it possible for the guibo to rub against the selector rod when weight shifts to the front?

did you fit a new guibo when you changed the gearbox? they can rub the selector rod if they start to tear...

It could also be that your selector needs a slight bend in it for more clearance

Its a new guibo. Someone said theres one with the same bore but smaller diameter and that the one I have is possibly from a e34...any truth to this?

Checked realoem - e34 zf guibo has exactly the same PN as e36 ZF guibo...:indifferent-:

I thought about bending the rod but wanted to check if there are any other solutions. Saw a thread on a short shifter install where they had to bend the rod slightly to clear the guibo. Seems thats the next step then

there are number of different size guibo you may find one that works but if you have a short shifter the clearance will be less so you may have to bend the rod even with a slightly smaller guibo...

there should be marks on the the selector or the guibo also if this is where your problem is

Did notice a line on the selector that looks all shiny. Im almost sure this is where my problem is.

Just not sure why its only present when weight shifts to the front...a sign of bad engine and gearbox mountings perhaps?

I would check those mounting also... it could just be that reverse gear puts the rod closer than all the other gears and when the drive line shifts slightly it rubs

You dont seem to be getting lucky with this car - but you do seem to be learning all the way along...:skit:

I think what you mentioned is spot on - the only logic approach to ask why the guibo touches the selector rod...is play or movement.

Play and movement are restricted by your mountings.

You will probably find a combination of slightly worn engine mounts, coupled with a worn or 2 worn box mountings... equates to enough play to let parts strat rubbing each other up.

Try get in under the car(only once supported safely), and have someone change gears, and observe what the selector rod does when the different gears are selected.

i'll bend the rod tonight and hopefully this wont offset the shifting too much.

Ive also decided to replace the mounts over the weekend just for good measure.

So I bent the rod and this is 100% not touching the guibo...shifter is a little off center now but its no big deal.

verdict...Noise still present

Removed the prop and found the rear U-Joint feels very loose(for lack of term). The one on my old prop feels notchy in comparison.

BMW U joints are not serviceable nor replaceable so i'll have to once again start looking for a prop shaft:bangdesk:
