Hi all,

so recently moved from Cape Town to JHB ,Vanderbiljpark.

My wife will be working in Randburg so will like to get a place closer to her work meaning il have to travel from randburg/Douglasdale to Sasolburg everyday.

Looking around for a good car to travel distance(200km daily)

Any help will be appreciated

You need to be a it more specific, what is your needs? Comfort over economy? or power over comfort, etc. What is your budget?

For the amount of mileage you going to do, I suggest something very cheap to maintain, and relatively reliable. You will average about 4000km+ monthly, so keep fuel costs and running costs in mind.

lady driver so il say skip the 530d and look at a 120d . its smaller ,has comfort and power and will be light on juice

Bud, its a car for him. The lady is working and living in Randburg.

Also, long distances you need comfort: 5 series

Depending on space and budget, 5 or 3 series diesel WITHOUT Sportspax/Mpax (whatever the hell they brand it with these days)
1-er will be uncomfortable for journeys longer than 30 minutes

1 series is shopping cards and good for a few minutes drive

Look at 320d or 530d average 5 - 7Lt / 100km

Remember that clip that clarkson did on the Yaris at flat taps versus the E46 m3 just keeping up, who was lighter on fuel.

My answer here is do NOT buy new, if you put that kind of mileage on a new car, you will increase the already terrible depreciation curve by 30% perc

Nobody wants a 2 year old with 80k on the clock.

Well maintained 5'er

I would look at the 520d F10, its really not expensive to maintain, provided you maintain it.

Thats service every 7,500km not 15, be prepared to do suspension every 100,000 and turbo's could go for 250,000 provided driving techinque is equal.

Your only concern on a high miler is gearbox, every 75,000km you pay ZF 6k to do a proper gearbox flush for you, and even that will last well into the 400,000km mark.

That said, the new 8HP gearboxes (8 speeds) are indestructable, as found on the F10's and F30's onwards, have not heard of one failing except where the guy hit something and cracked the casing, not knowing.

At the risk of punting,

Excellent value here,

but for your application, a 520d may be a better option.. Something that you have to keep in mind, long driving daily = tired

tired = possibility of fatiuge related accident, thus safest car you can buy, F10.

lol I have a M sport and I will most def be happy driving her for 200kms or more and the Sasolburg road can't be that busy so it will be a pleasure flooring it a bit :)
