Another one I forgot to mention is the E82 120d coupe. Can pick up a later model lci for less than 200k. Shape also aged pretty well
E82 120d pricing has always been a pet peeve of mine. I'd much rather get a 330d for similar money and have a lot more power to play with

We sold my wife's clean 120d E87 Msport for R130k a few months ago where similar 120d Coupes were selling for 180-200k.The price difference between E87 and E82 just never made sense to me

Do you already have the E36.

How much more in rand terms are you spending on petrol vs. capital outlay for a new car, monthly insurance payment and fuel.

Lets say you do 2000kms a month, your monthly fuel bill should be ~R5000.

Lets say you buy a R250k car, that is R4600 (roughly, lots of things to take into account such as deposit, bank risk rating, etc etc).
Then you insure the vehicle. Say you get a very good deal at R600.
Then you must poor petrol to use it, if it gives you average of 5l per 100, thats R2400.

Current situation: sunk costs + R5000 petrol

New situation: R4600 + R600 + R2400 = R7600

Unless you do more than 3000km a month,

I still have the e36.... I wont sell that car. My son wants it when he starts driving.
I use it at times when i know ill be going to the office in non peak hours so im not sitting in traffic.
With the single mass stage 2 clutch it can get abit irritating in traffic.

great break down on costs tho. Makes you rethink

And driving a crappy car for > 3000 km a month, the pain I would feel when I know I have an M340i parked in the garage.....priceless 🤣
I dont think F Series cars are crapy at all. We still have e series and f series cars in the family which i drive often and they still great cars to drive.

Thanks for all the reply's gents....

I think the thought of getting a "new" car blinds you from making sense of the situation.

Will hang on abit and see how the traveling goes with the 40.

Nah those are great cars without a doubt.
That was more in line with driving the "student" car options at R150k. Not sure what condition/mileage F series car can be had at that kind of price?

I saw the conundrum.

Your M340i is out of plan this year and already on 80k km - do the mileage and it takes it to close to the psychological mark where people won't be AS interested at say 95k km. Your car is still in a sweet spot to sell and return a decent price, versus the car at 95k km.

Sell and buy a low mileage M340i as they are such proper cars.😂

This crossed my mind many times :ROFLMAO: i wont lie.... Look most of the common issues on the g series have already been sorted on mine. and it took lots of running around to get BMW to fix these things. So my cars good. I know whats done already and what may still need to be done. Ill stick with the devil i know...

W204 C350D, less popular so it attracts less attention and still very good value for money for what you're getting. They drive really well too.

Typical Boy Maths.

Spend R150-R250k on another car. Plus insurance , maintenance and and and, to save possibly R150-R250k on your current car when you eventually sell it. ( not to forget the depreciation on the "new car " )

Also, you'd be driving a much lesser car everyday.

Just daily the 340.

Yeah, @OP I'd get the logic of saving miles if it was something obscenely uncomfortable for daily traffic - but an M340 must be a bliss in traffic - enjoy it. The R100k hit you take down the line selling it will be far, far less than the mission of running an added car.

If you travel to dodgy areas or places where the roads are crap, then consider a cheap daily to take the abuse. Otherwise, the M340i makes sense.

I would get a cheap but correctly maintained 320D or 120d. Along the lines of a 2008 and up.
Something that you dont mind taking a beating, and will hold resale value when you will no longer need it.As well as still being a comfortable and premium drive.

If you really dont want to use the 340i, then I'd say look at an X3 2.0d or 320d.

Both can be had for fairly cheap, I would not look for the best example if you're parking in dodgy areas as you don't want to be upset if it ends up with a small ding or scratch.
Mechanically must be good, although both platforms are pretty reliable and maintenance costs aren't crazy high. The X3 could serve as the family car and the extra ground clearance might open up some unique parking spaces if this is needed.

There's also fuel cost savings of driving a 120d vs the M340i daily. I don't know if they will be significant enough for the distances he travels but that must be factored into the calculations.

That.

You gonna lose the same amount any which way , wouldnt you rather be in something you enjoy ?

R250k goes a long way to support your current car if/when it goes out of plan or invest the money into something stable like a money market account and when you are ready to replace the 340, you have an additional 8-10% on the 250k you invested saved for a replacement/upgrade
