I know you moved house and all that :blab:

But...er...updates?

Hahahahaha! Unfortunately moving took a bit of precedence on this occasion.

So a bit of an update. I went and bought the 15 1/4 inch rims from the guy in Newlands here in Cape Town. The rims are actually stunning and the tyres in decent nick! I am very chuffed. The car they came off is a an absolute minter of an E12. 1984 m535i in Alpine White with 159,000kms on the clock. It's a stunner!
Anyways, the rims are lekker so going to put them on the car when I get it tomorrow from JHB, so I can preserve the originals. Unless you guys think I should keep the originals on?
On a more worrying note, the exhaust apparently fell off when they were putting the car on the truck to get transported here to Cape Town, and damaged the car below it. Hopefully nothing too serious, but I do know the exhaust needs to be replaced. This weekend I am going to try and get the car started, so will let you all know!

Thanks for the congrats guys, I just can't wait for the car to get here now!

So I took the original rims off and stashed them for now, I want to preserve them and don't want to take the chance with the tyres anyway. I put on the E12 M535i rims and it looks very classy indeed. Toyed with the idea of putting the M's rims on just to see, then thought better of it :roflol:
So this weekend I am going to do a fluid change and attempt to get the old fuel out and fire the old girl up.
Will take some snaps with the new rims and hopefully a vid when she starts.

Just as a foot note.....while I had the wheels off I was checking the brakes, the pads and discs are still brand new old,if that makes sense. The discs are not even slightly worn and the pads are full, just thought that was interesting.

Ok,so an update. Sorry,no pics as yet as most of them are of the mechanicals! When I first posted pics someone asked why the flat clutch pedal in the car.
Well I have solved the mystery. I spent a long time on the car today fiddling and faffing and doing some work. It seems like the clutch master cylinder is actually just not in the car. There is a hole in the firewall where the cylinder should be, so I am going to need to replace that. Any idea what one of those would set me back and if it is advisable to change the slave cylinder as well? I suppose the good news is that at least it's not a mechanical issue with the clutch.
Can anyone suggest where I may be able to get a replacement other than the stealership?

I do have updates actually.
So I stripped the fuel tank out of the car over the weekend and drained 10 litres of Fanta Grape from the tank. It was horrid looking stuff. I will post the pics of the work during the course of the week (waiting for my ADSL to be installed).
Anyways, pulled the tank out, drained and cleaned the tank, was covered in a thick layer of sand, must've been from that dust road the owner lived off. Checked the fuel lines connecting to the tank and they are all good and there were no leaks. Also changed the rims to the M535i ones, they actually look very lekker, they would've been used on the later model 6's as replacements for what I had on as standard.
Also fitted the spot lights, but think the bulbs may be missing cos they didn't come on. Drained all the old water out of the system and refilled with water and coolant. Checked all the brakes, seems as if they are in very good nick. There is no lip on the discs and the pads are still thick, which would show that they were replaced shortly before the car went into storage.
The shock absorbers don't have a single leak on them and still look new. There were some rubbers around the stabilizers on the rear suspension that looked worn. Oh, and the exhaust has now completely fallen off, so is going to need replacement (which I knew anyway).
The plugs are brand new, but I do need to check the spacings. The battery is now kaput and needs replacing (even though it was one I thought was new and had before I bought the car). However, I tried to start the car and she was starting to fire when the battery died on me. I suspect that there MAY be a fuel starvation problem, as I disconnected the fuel lines leading into the injectors and there was still old fuel in them. When I checked the filters at the back and the lines in the back, there was new fuel in them, so it seems there may be a pressure problem. I am hoping it's not anything huge like a new fuel pump, cos I can only guess those are expensive!
The other thing missing is the clutch master cylinder, there is just a gaping hole in the firewall into the driver's foot well. So that will have to be rectified soonest!
I am going to replace the battery and the fuses and relays today, so hopefully the car will be started this evening. I don't think it's far off!

Also, FANTA GRAPE FTW!!

Seriously though, at the rate you're working at, this car should start (and drive) before the weekend.

Nice work.

There are lots of pics! Just don't want to upload them using 3G, otherwise I will be asking Fanatics to sponsor me food money....:roflol:

I promise, you won't believe the colour of the fuel that came out of that car, it was unreal.

I am hoping to at least get it started by the weekend, on the road is a different story cos I am not sure where I am going to get that master cylinder from, and there are one or two other gremlins that need to be checked. But so far I am very impressed with the overall condition of the car. Except for that exhaust......eish.

There's a Midas around the corner here from me as well as a Goldwagen in Montague Gardens who should carry spares for these cars. So will check them out. See the nearest Suburban Spares (also a Midas) is In Maitland (well to me anyway). Hopefully it's not gonna cost a freaking fortune for one of those cylinders.....

Update: Replaced the battery and all the fuses with new ones. Car started first time. No idle though, Wes assures me this is normal. I did get a lot of smoke coming from the exhaust manifold, I suspect this MAY be old fuel or oil burning off the branches, but I cannot say for sure. Either way, it stank, and it smelt like exhaust fumes,so I am not sure.
Car was wonderful except for this small noise coming from where the exhaust USED to be :roflol:
Now all I need is that clutch master cylinder (ZAR950 from Midas) and then the exhaust will need to be replaced and we should be good to go. So far it has cost me about R5k to get the car to where it is now (not including the transport from Jozi) so I am quite chuffed! Suspect she will sound awesome once the exhaust is replaced.

Ok, so here are some pics as promised. Please don't expect anything spectacular, the car is in sort of bits and pieces!!

Front shock looking VERY clean. All of the shocks looked exactly like this:

Front disc and pad. Again, all the discs and pads looked exactly the same. Think a good cleaning will probably bring them right:

As you can see, absolutely NO lip on the disc:

The new rim (on the front) vs the old rim (on the back). I prefer the old ones as they are specific to that year model, but I do like the newer ones.

Water from the system after draining:

Spark plug. I pulled all the plugs and they all looked like this one did.

This is where the clutch master cylinder is supposed to go. Haven't priced from BMW but got a decent price from Midas.

Fuel tank shortly after taking it out.Note the dust and sand covering the tank.

Tank after a serious cleaning with a high pressure hose. Looks brand new (well until it dried, then it just looked old again).

The fuel that I drained out of the tank. 10 litres of the stuff. Wes, now you know why I said it looked like Fanta Grape!

Car up on the jack stand sans a petrol tank. Notice the dust lying under the car. It was absolutely caked in this stuff.

This is just illustrating how much I am trying to protect the car:

This is the replacement rim, just as a reference.

That's what I have so far. As soon as I get the master cylinder in I will get the car to an exhaust place to get that sorted out. Think I may pull the branches off and replace the exhaust manifold gaskets (because I have a packet full of them). May as well if the exhaust is going to be replaced.
