Gear problems...

Hi guys

after my roof issues 2 days ago this is the last thing I need...

I was driving off from a tricky intersection where my view was not too great so I gunned it a bit to get ahead of traffic. I was not dropping the clutch or anything. As I was slacking down for the robot I felt the clutch re-engage and the motor stalled. The clutch felt funny and immediately I though clutch had gone.

I was 2km from my work so I decided to just pull off starter motor style and shift with revs. I drove about a km this way and for interest sake I tried for 3'rd gear with the clutch and it went in no problem? I slacked down a bit, down shifted to 2'nd and again no problem? All of a sudden I could stop and go again. Also stopped in front of our security gate and pulled off without any problems.

This is now really bothering me. I don't want this to happen when I'm stuck in traffic somewhere?? I've never had any slippage or any indication of clutch failure.

Any opinions on what it could be? Apparently the clutch and the brakes work off the same reservoir and the clutch will lose pressure first... Not sure if this could be the problem.

Hey bud, same issue on my E36 325i, its most likely your master or slave cylinder, they are fairly cheap to replace so start with that, I would suggest replacing the rubber clutch line with a stainless steel one, everything should come to +- R4000.00

I also suspected something like this. I think I will first find out what the normal master/slave costs. At this stage I don't have R4000 lying around

For now you just have to pump the clutch a few times if it doesn’t want to select gear, and avoid changing gear at high rpm until you sort it out. but before you change anything put the car on a ramp and inspect for leaks, not engine oil but transmission/brake fluid

This is not nice, but probably just the slave or master cylinder on the clutch. Maybe you just need to replace the seals and don't need to replace the whole unit.

So after a few diagnostics it's more or less confirmed the slave cylinder. Playing it safe I'm replacing both master and slave. luckily not as bad as expected. But still not a nice R4050 :bangdesk:

Taking it to the place where I usually took my MG. The labour is very cheap there and they still do a fantastic job. Out of the R4050 labour is only R875.

So I think it's worth it to rather have it done professionally.
