Fuel Consumption

My e36 318 is currently giving me 10.5 km per liter.

My wife drives the car to work and back. Around 40km in, 40km out. Most of this is on the N1/M5, but she does sit in peak hour traffic for most of it.

She gets around 550km on 52 liters.

I average about 10km/l in town driving in my E36 318IS 1997
On the open road it comes down to about 12km/l
That is sticking to the speedlimit, well most of the time!:)

In my E30 325 i use to get 7km/l so 12 is really good to me!lol

Which makes me think my consumption is abnormally high... What should I get checked?

It's that auto-box you got :p, have it changed to a manual, that should lower the consumption :)

I might be wrong but i feel our current grade of fuel is what's causing the consumption problem !

the problem with the 318i or my e36 316i is that the motor is not powerful enough to move the heavy body. so in theory the smaller engine should be lighter on fuel it has to work harder to get the car moving.

we had a e46 325i touring and its consumption was better than the e46 318i..

Driving style does play a major role as well.

put a 318i on the highway, set cruise control to the national speed limit and it will sip 7l/100km but in town driving its worse. my e36 i also get about 350K's out a tank, drove my moms e46 318i auto this last week and the consumption was sitting at 17.6l/100km for in town driving..

I Agree with my 328i, I fill it up and on a 3/4 tank I get about 400 km's town driving which equates to about 8l/100km and when I took it on the long road last week I got about 520km on a 3/4 tank and I was cruising on 120-140 kmph. 15l/100km for a 318i sounds quite a bit.

I'm on 13.8l/100km's with my e36 328i 'vert (much heavier than the 328i sedan) and that's with mixed driving.

Yours is abit high for a Manual box :thinker: or his your foot made of lead :)
Then i reckon i`m ok for 10.2l/100km for mixed driving daily (Auto Box) without a lead foot :)

I get minimum 650 km per tank on my E36 316i = decat is the way to go (that 80% town / 15% highway / 5% fooling around)...

I saw this video on youtube tonight...
I found everything quite obvious, except for the last point. Anybody willing to try it?

he's basically 'cutting' the fuel, like drag racers would mix toluene and petrol to get higher octane.

I'm worried about the engine/ managements reaction if you tired that?
I wonder if he's increasing the octane by adding acetone, any chemists around?

But I will agree on the new air filter and maintaining the tyre pressure.
