16.4l/100km :dropjaw: That's crazy, your mom must have a traffic heavy commute to work? I'm lucky that most of my driving doesn't consist of traffic jams so I average between 10 and 11l/100km.

The 4cyl are heavy in town.. our E46 318i is currently on 13.7l/100km.. was at 15-16 but did a hiway trip on the weekend

thats heavy, my 130i used to sit at 12.1 in this jhb traffic...

This whole fuel consumption debate has come up many times...

its all dependent on driving style & also the 4cyl bmw's need to be reved high to get anywhere so uses more petrol...

my manual e46 318i I average about 12l/100km but can get it up to about 15 with my normal to uni & back driving but then on the hiway I get it down to like 6l/100km... best i got from a tank was 9.6l/100 in my normal driving but that was trying so hard, changing gear at 3000, never going over speed limit (ie gently accelerating to 60 & staying there) then when coming to a robot / stop street letting go of gas & coasting to a stop.. it really annoyed me.. got so frustrated but was testing.. got 526km on the tank... but if I drive normally with a mix of fast & slow I get about 485km a tank so not worth the effort driving like granny

That is quite heavy, okay I suppose on the reef doesn't help! My 330i seems to sit around 12 - 13 l/100 km in pure town/traffic conditions, and then anywhere between 9 - 10 l/100 km for open road driving. Combined town and open road it seems to sit around 10 - 11 l/100 km for me, a bit higher when my Wife drives! :)

That's impressive! Best so far that I got was 8.3 l/100 km but that was with four up and mostly driving at the happier side of the speed limit - I reckon with a slightly more sensible drive it could come down closer to that consumption. :)

It was on a a drive to durban, basically just put the car in 6th and put the cruise control on 125km/h (GPS speed) (or lower depending on the speed limit). When I got to durban my consumption was at 6.8 and when I got back to pretoria it was at 7.2. I have to say I did do some spirited driving in durban, how could i not? I just had to feel what my car was like at the coast :)

LOL, I am spoilt being at the coast! Nothing like a Six breathing in fresh coastal air! That's still very good consumption - mine can get very thirsty on the shorter trips around town so keeping a low consumption becomes tricky, not to mention resisting the odd heavy right foot application... :)

I have found it best not to care, and not to look at the fuel gauge when putting your foot down, it almost looks like you can see it go down :), but for me in the end I just open my window and listen to the sound of the engine and I no longer think about the consumption. It (the whole car and the feel and sound of it) makes me happy and for that I don't mind spending more on fuel.

Edit: For me a car is not just something that I need for transportation, it part of my way of life, if it wasn't I wouldn't own a car with a 3l engine capacity :)

That's true! I had one of those "appliances" used to just get you from point A to B - the model number was 160i GLE iirc! :)

For what my car is I think the fuel consumption is pretty good, and I like the overall sedate look and sound that it has - it's a case of being a wolf in sheep's clothing most of the time - most of the time! :)

So very true  I bought my 330i knowing that the fuel consumption would be heavy but it's a small price to pay for the joy of driving such a brilliant car!

When I talk with some of my "not so car orientated" friends, they just like to point out how "impractical" my car is, the thing is I like how low my car is to the ground, I like how low the front bumper is, I like the large wheels and I like the low profile tyres, I like the general heavy feel to the shifting action.

Some of there comments i just want to give them a slap :slap:, but I guess if a car is just a consumable for someone they will never understand, sure if you look at it my car as just a car it might be impractical, but its the impractical bits that make it so special.

And yes, my plans for the future do include stuff to make my care even less practical :)

how is a 330i not practical? It has 4 doors, nice size boot, is safe, is awesome, has nice power..

My fiance's Corsa 130i gets 15l/100km at the moment.. has only 2 doors. small boot. and is not as safe as a e46... SO not nearly as practical a a 330i.. and also really not as cool... But it only cost R40k last year. has very low mileage & runs good. so for her its perfect as works only 1.5km from the house..

Guess I am used to high fuel consumption... As all our family cars have a higher than normal consumption..

the E30 got 15 to 16l/100km ( driven hard once engine warmed, every time)
the E36 i got about 14.5l/100km (Had to be driven hard to get it to go anywhere)
the e46 i get about 12l/100km (also has to be driven hard to get going)
the e46 auto gets about 15l/100km (heavy car, underpowered engine & auto....)
the e90 sitting on 16l/100 (underpwered, heavy, auto, woman with a heavy right foot driver)
the e60 sitting on about 19l/100 (got the power, gets used :) )
the jeep 4.7l V8 sitting on 30l/100km (has too much power, we use all that torque up (needed a new set of engine mounts at only 58K KM)
the landy 3.9 V8 gets about 26l/100km (holiday house vehicle, only very short trips)
the pajero old 2.5td 13.3l/100km (holiday vehicle & 4x4 toy :))

so it all depends on driving styles.. as most our driving is short, stop/go, traffic type

Those consumption figures are a bit higher than normal I would say but do hold true. My ex-Corolla which was a dog by comparison to the 330i used mostly the same amount of fuel - difference is I was driving the Corolla fairly hard a lot of the time. Wasn't too bad on the open road, but the 330i is close enough and then has a whole hell of a lot more reserve power for overtaking etc. So let's say in real terms my ex-Corolla was maybe 1 - 2 l/100 km more economical overall - the 330i still puts a bigger smile on my face and that's worth the extra fuel used!!! :)
