First Timer looking for advice

So I recently became financially independent, at least just for my car for now.

I've always been a fan of BMW, and obviously I would eventually buy one regardless of what my first car is. Realistically, I wasn't expecting to get a BMW as a first car, but yesterday, a friend of mine approached me privately in selling his e36 318is.

He says he has had all the leather re-done, just replaced the shocks, replaced all the tires (including the spare). It's clocked about 200-250 (not sure), but the thing is I've driven it quite a few times and I haven't found any issues. The engine sounds and works like a brand new one (I don't hear any clunks), the clutch is still in top condition, all the electronics are fully functional and he just took it in for a full service two weeks ago. It's genuinely been really well looked after, I'll take a picture when I see him again. He is also the only previous owner, so I know where it is coming from.

He's asking for R 55k. Do you guys think its worth it?

Bit pricey hey. I sold mine (fair enough not an "is") for 40K.

Welcome!...

Take a look on Gumtree...for that kind of money you will find a very nice e36 with low milage...

never buy a car from a friend... it can only end in tears, especially since it sounds like you don't really know the history of the car...

if you knew the car and its history from your own experience and how its been looked after might be different story.

price also sounds a bit high, maybe he redid the leather, decided he wants something else so he is trying to sell it to a mate as a "favor"...

It also depends how good friends you are and whether you both understand the risks regarding buying and selling a used car.

But it is also a good idea to rather have a look what else you can get for the money.

+1 on too expensive. thats almost E46 money....

Actually that is E46 money, not a nice E46 but I heard guys trading in 320's and so for like 38k.

+1 With regards to buying from a friend first of all.

Price is high, but if well looked after and in very good condition at a stretch maybe worthwhile, but I'd seriously look around for similar age/mileage cars to get a feel for the market. The fact that you "know" the car is also a good thing. And yes, at that sort of price you could be looking for a younger E46...

Wow, why restrict yourself to a 2nd hand e36. Rather have a look at a M6 Coupe, New F10, or both,:fencelook:

Bwahaahahahhahahahahahahaha, I don't think he is that financially independent cybermatrix. Hell I'm not even that financially independent LOL

Speaking of car prices I found two E90's this week for less than 100k, seems that prices are going to *&@# awaiting the new 3 series.
