So.. Things finally seem back to normal with the F30.. Lots of grip at the rear again  Still not 100% convinced that I need to buy a new OEM 396 mag so for now I shall run her as she is.

I have an Oct 2012 320i. I got delivery in Dec 2012. Since then they have changed 2 steering racks. There is still a knock on the front right. They have been denying tha they are hearing any knock. I normally wait until it gets bad so they can hear it. Remember they already changed 2 racks, each time telling me that the new modified rack will solve the problem. No such luck. I am now at a lost and don't know what to do.

Ever since I got my F30 early last year I could definitely hear a knock from the front right suspension. With mine being one of the very 1st F30s off the production line for this brand new model I thought perhaps this is what the new suspension sounds like..

I did mention it twice at 2 different dealers which could not really pick anything up.. Well the noise was persistent and surely I thought to myself after travelling with friends in another F30 there is no noise from this one.. So on Weds my F30 went in for a routine service: Oil, Filters & Brakes.

This time I mentioned it again and was greeted with excellent service, immediately the service consultant got the lead tech out to go on a drive with me and they noted 3 noises: 1) The rattle from the steering column, 2) The rattle from the interior light and 3) The knock coming from the front right suspension as I have always been complaining about..

They took the matter up very seriously and low and behold with the entire suspension dropped on the car and numerous emails to BMW technical about default settings being adjusted, etc. they have now ordered me a new steering rack which will be installed tomorrow. Top class service as they actually listen to what their clients have to say, other dealers just don't care and they seriously ruin the brand reputation by not doing their jobs properly..

I must admit I have been annoyed having to pick and choose one of the VWs to drive around with now but all in all I am glad my daily baby is getting sorted.. They also said they have replaced about 6 racks on F30s thus far at this dealer alone.. Guess I will finally appreciate the F30 after this as mine has had the knock since day 1..

So if you have a knocking noise take your F30 in and have it checked out!

Nice. I bought my F30 12 months ago and was the first one at our company. Now every second car is a F30 and mine looks so plain. I thought I'll give it a bit of a facelift but am struggling to get all the accessories. I bought the CF spoiler and got the CF mirror covers in USA free shipping. The order for the front bumper lip was cancelled as the shipping cost to SA was twice the price of the item.

Any idea where I can buy the CF continuous or splitter lip for the F30 320i standard front bumper? I'm also looking for CF kidney grills.

what will it cost me?

Thx

Ihave the same problem with my 2012 f30 320i. They changed 2 racks so far. The knock is still there. The BMW Technical Service Mang came for a test today. He heard the knock. He informed me that he would launch a Technical Report back to BMW. I should get a reply by Monday.

I have exactly same issue with F20 125i. It had it from brand new. Will book it to BMW ASAP seeing that it is a common issue on the new platforms.

Good night Terrence Singh, I am from Trinidad in the Caribbean. I have a 2012 320i Sportline from day1 I had the same problem they have changed the Steering rack 3 times. I am awaiting the return of the vehicle right now. They are testing it before they hand it over. Lawyers had to get involved since I requested a new car. They informed me that my car did not have a defect. What they said was that I had an issue with the car which they found to be a technical one and they are working on it with BMW Germany. They offered to give me 2 years additional warranty with free standard service. I was thinking about it , however when I mentioned to them if the defect cannot be repaired the vehicle should be replaced. In their response letter they failed to respond to that question.

The problem in these small Countries is that there is only one BMW dealer. These big companies tend to muscle in the customers into accepting what they offer, they are aware that I can't hire a lawyer to take them to Court.

So I have to wait and hope that my very first BMW which cost 0.5 Mil in my country is repaired.

If anyone out there has any additional information on having this problem solved kindly email me at [email protected].

regards

Tsingh

Every BMW has at least 1 major issue. With the F30 it seems to be the steering rack. BMW please redesign the steering rack.

Hmm, threads like this make me wonder if there's something wrong with my F30.

When going over a series of small bumps like ripples in the road or a paved/cobbled road I hear absolutely awful clunking sound from the suspension. When on normal road/larger bumps like speed bumps/driveways there's no sound, so I'd always assumed it was just normal. Is this what you guys are referring to, should I be booking my car in?

Good night , BMW has changed my Steering 3 times and the knock is still there. Actually I just got back the car last Friday. I am driving it for about a week now but still hearing something which I believe will get worst. The local dealer is not responding friendly. They have offered me an additional 3 years free basic service but as must sign a legal document stating that I would not make any claims against BMW in the future. However they are not admitting that the car has a defect. I am not signing.

My email is [email protected] I would appreciate if anyone has a similar problem please contact me.

Jip looks like the only major issue is the steering rack. I am on steering rack No2 and the noise is back at 45 000km+/- Ill complain about it at the next service. It seems to come from the input shaft of the steering rack. If you grab the shaft that comes from your fire wall to the rack itself and wiggle it then you will hear the play on it and how loose it feels. Other than that I love the car so far

I am hearing a noise on mine now since it went in to sort out some other stuff. I wonder if they swapped my car suspension parts with another F30 as they had my car for a week. Mine the noise is from the back when you go ovwer a bump you can hear as if something is loose.
