Eish there is a hidden problem in all that.

All cars have their problems. E46 had Lower control arm bushes, and power steering pump and diffs. E90 gearbox injectors and head. F30 seems to be only the steering issue(it seems this might have a relation to the humming). I ask please dont comment on a car you have not owned for you have No idea what you are talking about. I can say the F30 320d is one of the best cars I have driven in a long long time and i am thinking of keeping it for a long time even when I buy a newer model in a couple of years.
So if you don't own an F30 please focus on your own kind of car with their problems or success. Don't be jealous or afraid the F30 is better and accept change of going forward
Remember their is nothing wrong with the car it's just we are fanatics about our BMW and we want it perfect and we notice the slightest rattle or knock. Imagine me getting into an E30 and gave to compare that to an F30. Ish the noise and road holding compared to an f30. Not to mention all the problems with such an old car I might have

Are you being serious...........?
I need to own an F30 to be able to comment on its reliability and the like?
Do you even know how the power assisted steering system works on your car?
I am not asking if you have read about it I am asking if you know how it works.
Your response lacks substance and is irrational.
Luigi_S said:Well, the knocking noise has now disappeared thanks to the new steering rack. Car feels much tighter over bumps now.
See how it goes from here. Hopefully this will be the only issue. Intend on keeping this one for at least 10 years.

In your quest to have the last word you have confirmed what I suspected.
Suffice to say that whilst you were a twinkle in your mothers eye I was driving my e12 528.......and the e30 in my signature I built from the ground up unlike the car you drive.
As to my mechanical understanding when you can do this:http://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/forumdisplay.php?fid=171
come and re engage with me.
