F30 328i ///M Start up Noise

Hi Guy,

Sometimes on start up my 328i sounds like a diesel engine, but quites down after 10min or so, i was just wondering if this is normal or not.

After some research some guys say the sound comes from the direct port system but after seeing this video i am a bit worried:

Mine is not THAT loud but i can still hear it while inside the cabin.

Mine does makes a kinda diesel noise when cold starting. Seems to go away as soon as the engine has gone through it's initial warm-up cycle and the revs have dropped down to normal idle speed.

I had a similar experience with my e90 335i before my current F30 328i. Unless is really bad and you experience issues when driving - like vibrations or a strange sound revving I wouldn't worry too much. I mean, I know my engine is silky smooth when driving, so I'm sure you'd pick up if there was something out of place (especially if there was something as noticeable as in that video).

Really hope it isn't serious!

Thanks bud, it also does down down once warm but i can still here the tapping noise even when warm. Its has made me run a oil level check daily but i think i'll be more calm now since it appears its normal.

I'll make a point of listening out a little more closely tomorrow morning and let you know if I can hear anything out of the ordinary too...

Mine did that, was an issue with one of the injectors

The ticking sound = normal, knocking sound when he revs = broken

lol don't bother taking to BMW they will say it is within spec, I am getting tired of the "within spec" line. My exhaust sounds like there is sand in it when idling and whenever I ask them to have a look they say it is within spec. I also have the diesel sound on startup. Eish can't wait for first service to be done as the car sounds a bit sick. I think 30000km before first service is a stretch and in my case will be 35000 as the computer was reset as the mileage was not dropping :nonono:

Mine doesn't sound like a diesel but it does have a funny sound which I take is normal considering everything is still cold.

Mine sounds like a tractor as well on startup. Does simmer down when the car warms out, but still sounds like a diesel when stationary. Asked BMW and they said this is normal on a F30.
Buddy of mine got the same car like mine and sounds the same. these are 2012 models.
However, a colleague of mine just bought a new 3201 MSport, got delivery this week, and it is quite silent on cold start and when temperature.
