Howsit guys.

I havnt seen this thread on the forum so here goes...

Have just ordered my M performance box from the dealer, and looking to also get the Afe intake.

Im planning to remove it and replace with stock when my car goes in for a service but the question is, CAN BMW PICK UP THAT I'VE CHANGED THE INTAKE? (Obviously still under motorplan)

The reason Im worried is because the MAF sensor is plugged in somewhere and different values will be sent to the Comp box surely?

Anyway, constructive responses appreciated

I think they can pick it up.

You'll enjoy your M performance box :)

I've also been reading up on the AFE intake

Haha cant wait till it arrives! :joy:

Why do you say they can pick it up though?

If I replace the afe with the stock intake before a service what exactly will they pick up.....

Probably nothing during routine service. In the case of major engine failure, not sure if the ECU store logs on what the intake was flowing at the time of failure.

See thats what I want to make sure of before I buy in from the US

Be wary. Was reading on one of the US forums, a chap with his 328i popped the engine and BMW were able to pick up through the logs in the ECU that the car had a map on it. They ended up refuting the claim for a new engine due to this.

That is a full custom map not an intake. Out of spec maf readings could be argued as a faulty maf.

There is so much of misinformation floating around its almost more hilarious than watching a standup comedy,

First up, your question about the performance back box: as long as BMW install it they will not have any problems with servicing or failures related or unrelated to the backbox.

The intake, either AFE or BMS should not be left on if the car goes for service, also note that the dme is not bothered with logging air flow and saving it as part of the FASTA data, the increased airflow from the aftermarket intake can be comparable to variances experienced with different temperature, humidity, altitude and speed. For these variances the dme is able to adapt its operation to suit the conditions.

Lastly, the obvious here has been overlooked, if you going to change the intake out for an aftermarket then use the correct tools so not to scratch, damage or leave signs of work on the clamps. This is probably the most obvious way to be detected by the dealers.
