Extinction of Manual performance cars

I think we are still quite a way off but I do agree that someday it will happen. Round about the same time autonomous driving becomes a norm.

I don't think its autonomous cars that will kill of the Manual and Automatic transmission , I think its electric cars that will kill off everything that we know about cars . Once these become more mainstream , the charge times decrease, manufacturers start adding more models to their ranges and the Distance range extends to over 700kms , the petrol and diesel engine with its gearboxes will be dead .

I spoke to an I3 owner a few months back , he was an older chap, and he said the only reason he still has a petrol engine car was for long distance driving, his now thinking about selling the car as he worked out that it would be cheaper for him to hire a car for long distance travel then to keep his petrol engine car , once he got used to the way that electric car worked , he find it very difficult to go back to a normal petrol engine car, He tells me its perfect for his daily driving needs . If manufacturers improve the above , and the older people get over "range anxiety" (Younger buyers wont have this issue as it would be a norm for them if range improves) I don't see much of a future left for internal combustion engines.

Think that manual is really finished. Most younger drivers these days are far more interested in simple speed - look for instance at stuff like the A45, not a particularly engaging car, but very, very fast.

That and the fact that so few manual models actually move off floor rooms because autoboxes/Dual Clutch systems are simply faster means manual will very soon be dead because there is no drive to keep developing and improving them.

Manual is going to go away its an inevitiable process. Like with the GTi only coming in the Vrrr Pah format the same will apply to all other cars.

Even bakkies are nice in auto now. I love manual but honestly after driving a few high performance vehicles I am convinced there is no need for manual cars anymore. Why do you really need to change gears?

another thing to note - with more and more traffic everyday, joining parties such as recently matriculated members, people able to afford their own cars etc, they are engaging in a more efficient process, less work type of thing.

i think most us agree that a manual car in traffic - SUCKS! making it easier to go for auto.

older generations, prefer manual. it's what we are used to. how we learnt to really drive and think about every snap shift. not just planting a pedal and ppphhra pa away we go.

i think most people also take advantage of this and don't able proper driving skills. point and shoot has become the norm. insurance companies love this :fencelook:

clutch control has saved me too many times from making dumb mistakes. cornering too fast, trying to pull away to fast etc.

but for more convenience - auto is the next big thing. still a long way to go before electrics kills off the mechanical

I think the change is inevitable.. automatic cars were introduced many moons ago, but have only recently become so popular as they have perfected over the years and are a lot faster and reliable now.. electric powered cars are likely to go through similar gradual integration..
I drive in Jozi traffic in my manual and I have never owned an automatic except for the wife's cars.. I really don't mind at all, but I must admit that auto is more convenient for traffic..
If funds allow, I would still want an oldie in manual even with the advent of electric/autonomous cars
As autonomous driving I think it's far into the future..

Big, NA engines with manual transmissions are becoming less and less. I read a post recently that summed it up perfectly, newer cars are faster, quieter, more comfortable, more fuel efficient, more tech inside, cause less pollution etc etc. But they are becoming more boring to drive. Most people aren't petrol heads and just want to get from A to B with the least amount of effort. Petrol heads want to enjoy the drive and I find that's about the only aspect the newer cars are lacking. But I'm probably in the 1% of drivers, so car companies would be stupid to cater to my needs/wants.
I haven't driven in 3 months and I'm going through withdrawals :blueCry:

Personally I prefer the driver interaction with the car, yes the autos from today are faster and more convenient in traffic, but no driver interaction. I enjoy the 335 more with the manual, I first tested an auto and was happy I got a manual, its just my personal preference. Even when I drive the scirocco, I will leave it in auto only until its warm or I'm in traffic, otherwise I switch over to manual.
