Easy/Difficult stealing an E36 ???

The E32/34 range is funny, because you punch in a security code and think you are safe.

Thief opens the cubby, sticks his finger behind the OBC pops the computer out and can then start the car with the alarm disabled..........

Yes even BMW engineers are brilliant geniuses sometimes.......An alarm/immobiliser with a quick release lever....fantastic.

To this day I am still wondering about the used spares parts salesman that showed me that little trick when I needed a new OBC.

Since then I now add a locking screw to the release lever behind the radio, makes life far more difficult for any car "liberator"

On e30 I forgot code I had entered , so pulled off battery cable and put it back after a few seconds -no code needed !!
1992 e36 has plain key and 1996 has transponder key , still not 100% foolproof .
If the buttons on the key lock the car and it is deadlocked ,immobilised and alarm set then BMW seem happy enough to not upgrade systems as most insurers will replace vehicles under a year old when stolen which counts as a sale .
Rick any ideas ? pm welcome !!

during my time of E36 325i ownership I had 2 attempted theft, both times the door lock was smashed in, and the ignition key was smashed in, both occasions it was thwarted by the Netsar alarm which coudn't be cancelled and Netsar reacted quickly and immobilized the vehicle before they could start it.

Agreed...seeing an e36 sitting on the ground like that with everything missing gives me cold shivvers!

A few years ago my e46 was stolen at one of the car parks on Blouberg beach...I thought they were hard to steal. Was running on the beach, got back to the car park with key in hand and no car! Cops found it abandoned a few days later near Milnerton.

The two button E36's are piss easy. The three button the crooks have to swop the ECU with a EWS inactive chip, apparently they can still do this in less than a minute.

My one Buddies e46 got stolen at H2O about 3 years ago, I always thought from e36 up all BMW's were relatively theft proof, imagine the shock we got when we walked back to the car to find it missing, car still not recovered.

i also thought the e46 was hard to steal so it would rather be hijacked... looks like maybe i should look at more security...

I too was under that impression.... when I bought my car, a family member who works for bmw told me that the e36 (motorsport) and e46 (sports pack) are prone to being hi-jacked because they are popular and aren't that easy to steal.

Getting whiskey not a problem.... where can I get cyanide from ???

Golf one is easier to steal than a e36,

But all the evo 1 e36 (1992 - mid 1995) where very easy to steal, because u lock the car using your key, to inable the alarm via the keylock. The thief just comes and breaks the keylock & disables the alarm system. break the steering lock and bye bye. (It happend to my parents - My mom had a 1995 m3, that was stolen 1st of December 2009 @ a petrol garage in Rustenburg, when she just ran inside the shop to buy milk, 5min later the car was gone.) till this day we have not heard or seen it again.)

I bought them another e36 - 325I (Modified the alarm system big time... :argh: the thiefs....)

evo 2 e36 (1995 - 1998) where fitted with EWSII emobolisers making it a bit more trick.

I must agree with Rick540, The best alarm system in the world is the one only u know about, I disables my car's door keylocks & modified my OBC code emobliser. (They have not tried to steal my car yet, touch wood...)

apparently the e36 4 door is the toughest one to take( not impossible, just takes very long and they can get caught.( they call it the brake light)... everything else is easy including 2 door. But why rob and take something. We work hard for our stuff and they take it and sell it for nothing.. :argh:

can the code in the obc be overridden
i always punch in one
the e36 built after 1995 have transponders fitted so i think it is a bit more difficult to steal

What is this code in the obc that you speak off? please forgive me if this is a silly question :flyfun:
