Awesome stuff Gert, how much did the rim perfection cost, sometimes it is better to weigh out cost vs quality. Alot of the time is easier for us to assume that some places are too expensive and we dont even consider it an option but in actual fact it might be marginally/acceptably more.

Howzit Sash,

They charge around R1500 for the work. This includes stripping of the old paint (not just a simple respray!), repair of an imperfections by alu welding, straightening if required, a full respray with Graphite coating, diamond cutting of the face with a really impressive CNC lathe and then clearcoating the rims again. They even organised me knew ///M emblems (these are R100 a pop from BMW)

If you don't diamond cut, the above cost R800. Not bad too bad to be honest. For this car I simply refused to cheap out.

Besides the time, there is some decent cash being invested here.

Eish, I've kept all the invoices but I'm way too scared to go and add it all up. It's better that way...

But in summary, this is what I've done so far on the car:
- Done a full service on the engine
- Cleaned and serviced the throttle actuators
- lubed the throttle shaft with some copper slip
- Replaced Diff oil
- Detailed the whole engine bay and front suspension components. This included removal of all belly pans and wheel linings to clean behind these.
- Had Peter look at the engine and give his nod of approval
- Had the car on a lift at Gizmo to go through the whole drivetrain
- Removed all paint spots that were on the car and did an initial polish on the whole car. There's still some imperfections but I'll tackle this once all other mechanical work is done
- Removed dent on C-Pillar of body
- Had the OEM mod done on the muffler
- Painted the Zorst tips black. I'm going to extend the mounting for the tips so I can get the tips further out from under the diffuser
- Had the rear bumper replaced and repainted. Lots of effort to get it to fit just right.
- Had a diffuser added
- Cleaned the steering wheel thoroughly
- Had the steering wheel trim wrapped
- Used those Magic Erasers on all the interior leather. I then cleaned all the leather and applied lots of leather conditioner with pretty good success. The leather is now satin and supple, no more shiny leather at all.
- Cleaned every nook and cranny of the interior and freshened everything up
- Replaced the scratched binnacle in the rear
- Replaced the drivers side seat belt helper that broke.
- Refurbed the rear mags and got new roundel caps for all the wheels
- Replaced the velour carpets in the car
- Found another cartridge for the CD Changer, so that's not being removed anymore (thanks Gizmo!!)

Things to do still:
- Have the front rims tarted up. I'll do a polish and see if that gets the results I want, else they will have to go for refurb as well
- Ordered a new gear knob and boot to replace the gagga one in the car
- I've received the filler bolts and oil strainer seal for the Tranny, I still need to change the oil on it.
- I've got all the bits now to install BT and USB in the car (mic, BT Antenna, Mulf and bracket, new adapter under armrest).
- The cabling for the Mulf must be installed to the armrest. I've held off on this as I'm debating whether or not to remove the base carpet in the car completely and to get it professionally cleaned. It's not really required, but figured it might be a good idea. Still not sure though
- The front bumper needs to be re-painted.
- I might have to get the bonnet repainted as well to remove the stone chips. I'll give it a good cut and polish and do a little paint correction, this result will determine if I'll have to respray or not
- Deep scratch on the driver's door needs to be repaired. I may tackle this myself as I've had some good results doing paint correction elsewhere on the car. I'm trying to avoid respray on the core of the car wherever possible for fear of paint mismatch.
- Have to get new gears cut for the Throttle Actuators.
- Clutch will need to be done soonish, as I'm getting slight noise from the pressure plate when I release the clutch.
- Bearings will need to be looked at eventually

That's pretty much it I think.

I'll try polishing up the front ones for now

Unfortunately that wont do anything, because of the clearcoat

Heh, it's the clearcoat that fades, so I'll polish this and hopefully see an improvement

DAMN!!! Thats some serious time and effort! ^^^^

Can't wait to get my pride back from the dealership (new motor due to bad bearings)!
Once she is back, we got to look into that throttle actuator problem...

Yebo,

Currently I'm looking for a duff actuator in order to test the new gears on. I really don't feel like stripping the engine bay again to test fit the gears on my actuators. Ideally I want the gears to be perfect before I do this. I'm calling out to anyone that might know of duff actuators. The dealers can't help as they are mandated to destroy these when replaced by BMW Germany

Have you managed to find someone to manufacture the gears?

Yebo, the models are being finalised as we speak. Then I'm having 3D copies printed for model verification. Once this is done I've found a company that can waterjet the Delrin parts for me

Thats excellent news!! Hopefully we can make our lives easier (and cheaper) now! Are you going with a brass center on the reduction gear?? Lastly, what do you think the final cost will be?

Thanks man.

Ok, I'm done with sorting out the fitment of the bumper and alignment of the Zorst.

I'm seriously thinking of making the tips come further out, but I'm so gatvol of taking the exhaust apart it's not even funny. Doesn't look too bad though, there's something menacing about gloss black tips

Now to put the wheels back on and see if everything works still

I think it's a good idea going for the brass centre, but it means that I won't be able to make a kit of parts as I have to modify the original centre gear. I suppose I can make a new centre big gear as well, but that's likely to push the price up.

I'm hoping to get to the R2k'ish mark, but such small volume custom cutting is stupidly expensive, especially with the fancy materials I want to use

Is that an aftermarket diffuser? Looks very aggressive

Well, count me in for when its time to buy a couple. Now I need to find someone willing to refurbish my actuators as I don't have the time, nor the tools :(

One thing about the exhaust tips... when the system is all warmed up, they tend to protrude a little more... ;)
