If the valve stem seals are bad you should have missfire though and from what I understand it's only the smoke on cold start? Taking that into account it means the car stands for a while triggering the cold start, giving oil the time to "settle down". If not visible anywhere my first go-to would have been checking inside the chargepipe and downpipe area for oil, if there is it might be turbo seals. Once again only speculating like true keyboard warriors :ROFLMAO:

Keep us posted after getting in touch with Ashley, I'll bet my next tank that he turns into your go-to guy for everything too going forward.
He just lives on the other side of the world, so getting there and getting home with traffic is a complete nightmare. He is deep south and i am deep north hahah :p. Car only stands over night. It stood for 3 weeks while i was away and this is when the issues started when i got back. But let me see what i can do.

It's worth it though, I travel the same distance and would not go anywhere else ;)

So went to HK performance instead.
Seems like the brand new tappet cover is getting replaced 🤣. Leaking everywhere. So getting one from the dealership instead and returning the old one back to goldwagen

I sometimes think GW sells rejects too…

Given the amount of returns or non lasting parts

Out of curiosity, what are the dealership pricing running at now?

So latest development, like I suspected. There is oil and water in my turbo. So now options are repair current turbo, which I feel is a waste. Or do a hybrid turbo in the stock turbo. We going to check if it's cracked, but suspect it should be fine.

Any recommendations in Cape town where to send the turbo off for internals?

Update from my side. Like mentioned before. Fitted an OEM tappet cover from BMW. Need to figure out how to return the other one back to goldwagen.

Sent my turbo off to west coast turbo Quintin and had a stage 3 turbo built. Thing looks absolutely monstrous. Just waiting for water lines and oil lines then it's getting fitted. Also just doing an oil change with a different grade oil for safety sakes.

How much did they charge to do the stage 3 turbo if you don't mind me asking? Also did you go with journal bearing or ball bearing?

I'm not sure on the entire details.

I'm waiting for the wheel size, specs etc. As soon as I get the information of what the exact details are I'll share them here. Went for a turbo recommended by the mechanic, but it's the same setups Chetty uses on all his cars if that helps, it's the same turbo guy. Think it was around R16k ex vat

Thats not to bad at all, i have been looking at a stage 3 journal bearing turbo from fast factory. It's literally double that price. I think it uses a Garrett core.

I used these guys. I'm 90% sure he uses Garret internals. But let me find out the details. The cheapest turbo I could find was fast factory but they wanted like 30-35k for that and ran up to 60k which is crazy money. Stock housing is a borg Warner bo3 turbo so it's a strong housing. Just throw Garret internals, and I think that should be enough?

As soon as I get into the car I'll give you an update haha. Had to get a couple more odds and ends to put everything together. I'm waiting for the call to collect

This is very interesting for sure.. Would like to hear what you think about it when its all done. Might just go the same route, but i will buy a cheap turbo to hybrid. Nothing wrong with my stock turbo at the moment so would just keep it.

Who fitted the tappet cover that you recieved from Goldwagen?

I bought a tappet cover and had a mechanic fit it for me recently which is out of the norm as I usually do all the work on my car myself, but this time I was strapped for time and had to have it done asap as it had quite a leak. Anyways few days later and I smell burning oil again, I take the engine cover off and it's leaking everywhere! I asked the mechanic to use a torque wrench and torque to the correct torque spec and I was assured that would happen.....It didn't obviously! and two of the inner bolts in the center, the long bolts that the injector grounds get bolted to were not even hand tight, I just took them out with my hands, completely loose, he obviously rushed the job and completely forgot about these.

I ordered a new OEM gasket from bmw, pulled the tappet cover off myself and redid the job I paid a mechanic to do, saw that he had over
tightened 4 of the bolts and pinched the gasket which was why it was leaking so badly.

I torqued everything down correctly and it's been as dry as a whistle ever since.
This is why I stopped using mechanics years ago and do everything myself!
The funny thing is I told the guy the tappet cover was leaking after he fitted it and he offered to redo the job, I then asked if I could stick around to see the valve cover come off and inspect it for any cracks and see where it failed "Usually he never has a problem with me being there" He came up with a very odd excuse and I immediately knew that he clearly didn't have the torque wrench he said he had and obviously didn't want me to see that he did a rushed job. Obviously I would see the damage to the gasket.

So the reason I am telling you this is because you are immediately jumping to the conclusion that the valve cover is at fault? How sure are you that the fitment was done correctly is my question! Allot of Mechanics seem to think that torque specs are there for funsies, even BMW themselves which is what I learned when they fitted my turbos back in 2017 to my last Z4...I had to call in the Thread king to remove the turbo manifold studs bmw "Torqued" so hard that the heads were twisted off!
