I drove my M3 e92 to durban and back. At a speed of 150 to 160km/h I got 520kms on the tank going down. coming back up i got about 480kms on the tank

On a relative cruise mode(around 140/150) you should get to Harrismith with just below half a tank and will need a top up for the other half of the journey.

I managed 11.5 up and 10.8 down

Bad Idea my friend we going to Durbs next week from CPT.I did the math and I have 335i E90 it costs way to much to drive.Flying and renting a car is way cheaper.However if you have the money then do it because its brilliant to travel the garden route with a luxury sedan.From a cost perspective its to much.

Eish bra somehow I can't let the Golf go, so much have gone into making it what it is today in terms of mods, memories etc, we're attached to it. but yeah at some point will have to part ways with it, it's sitting on +-200 000KM paid up and the thought of letting it go and start a new debt.

I fancy 135 Hatch back but I am waiting for the prices to drop a bit further

This is all dependent on how many people is flying, and total cost involved. Even with my 2 ton 3.6 V6, it was cheaper for myself + wife + kids to road trip to Cape Town from Centurion (took me 4 days to get there, cause road trips are awesome, when you stop where you want to and have a braai) Coming back it took me 3 days again, via a different route.

No offence to you bud, but I don't get why people would buy cars, to leave them in a garage, cause they too heavy on fuel.

So it might costs a few hundred bucks more, but sounds like the best way to enjoy the car to me. These cars are amazing on the open road and not THAT bad on consumption.

A paid for car is the best car.

I had a similar chat with my cousin on Sunday with regards to my daily driver.
Given its not paid off, but since I bought it from a friend for R20k under book, I will make a profit if I sell it now. The BMWFanatic in me, would love to flog it in favor of a 1 series, or older 3 series. However, it was bought as a daily driver, to drive 16km in traffic to work and school in the morning, and 16km in traffic back home, this job it does perfectly. I have spend a lot of time and money on preventative maintenance, its light on fuel, in a very good condition, and only has 100 4xx km on the clock, and nearly paid off. So to sell it for another daily driver would simply be financially stupid, seeing as its nearly paid for.
So I rather pay it off, pay my family car off, and get myself a toy, a Z4 roadster, and dump the rest of my monthly installments into my bond, and save tons of interest.

There's nothing like a road trip. Sure flying gets you there in 2 hours or so but you experience so much less. One doesn't get to truly appreciate just how incredibly beautiful this country is until you take some time and drive through it.

I get that life is expensive these days but I really do recommend spending some extra money and enjoying an epic road trip through this magical country of ours!

So in short, it would have cost me way more to fly(2 adults, 2 kids above 12 and 1 toddler), then drive.

I would also have missed out on a road trip. Even if it was cheaper to fly, I would have chosen to drive, I love road trips, so the cost is all worth it.

I have used my E92 M3 down to Durban a few times now, best advice I can give you is to take it and enjoy the road!! Thats when you really enjoy the drive and as soon as you get passed the Mooi River Toll, you just feel the difference in performance.

The consumption is not bad at all, from Jhb I get to around Howick with a full tank, so thats pretty much 10l per 100kms. Doing around 145km/hr. Which includes the occasional head rush when the right foot hits the floor :coolShake:

Took my ///M to the coast for the Durban July. Total fuel spend, just under R7000 :roflol: I actually find it funny. Thats over about 1300km covered in total.

How were you driving it to get 1300km costing R7k? You most probably will need new tyres after that as well.

R7000 it costed me R5500 with toll gates and doing a total of 1600kms, thats including 400kms of urban driving in durban. How fast were you driving?:biglol:

LOL... I was pushing quite fast at some points. On the way down, you won't even make it to Pietermaritzburg, thats WITH sticking to the speed limit of 120km/h. :roflol:

The car is something else at the coast. I really can't get over how responsive it is. Tyres are another story :hammerhead:, a normal pull off is just not in the cards.

Ag, I figured if I was all the way down there anyway (the only time I ever drive to Durban), I might as well push the car all weekend and enjoy it.

It really is a different experience in Durban, I took my car to JHB once on a trip and I can safely say it will never see the reef again under my ownership
