E90 Idling issue

2007 E90 323i sport.

Wanted to find out if anyone else is experiencing this issue.

Sometimes after driving a bit, when I come to stop the car has poor idling (like a car with a hectic cam) and it whistles (like a screaming pulley)

I have tested it two ways.
1) if you switch the car off and on again then it is all gone and back to normal.

2) while it is idling like a "crazy teef" I pop open the bonnet and then turn the oil cap, then with allot of struggle try to open it completely. What happens then is you can hear it is sucking in allot of air like "one of those galz from Point Road" and then the idling goes back to normal.

Guess it could be an breather filter issue?

Any comments would be appreciated.

I can relate the whistling sound I guess.. Mine turned out to be the cam pulley - made an horrendous noise.. It was replaced on my E90 320i according to BMW MP records with an E46 pulley.. :bravo:

The erratic idle could be the eccentric shaft sensor, but I would start by having the codes read to see if any errors come up. Screeching noise could be something as simple as the tensioner pulley.

Only seeing this now.

When last was the oil and filter changed?

I have seen a few threads on the E90Post forum with similar problems and it turned out to be a problem with the oil filter element that was not properly installed and ended up getting damaged, and deformed/twisted. The result being a slight drop in performance since it is restricting oil flow to the Vanos unit.

Check this vid out, sounds very similar:

Ok got the car back from Pro Car. They found nothing wrong except a full list of error codes that they have reset... They said if the car does it again then they will read the codes then take it from there.

Yes thanks Philip. I asked Pro Car to look into that. Codes was from indicator lights, brakes to vanos and crank sensor. 2 pages full of codes.

Vanos could be affected by the oil filter issue. If the sound can be localised to the oil filter housing, then you are "warm", if not then it could still be something else. These engines rely on oil pressure to the Vanos, so any blockage can affect performance and cause all kinds of errors to be stored. Not so sure about the crank position sensor error.

There is a worry that there is a problem with the crank shaft sprocket gear which may have shifted or become loose from a sheered bolt. This happened to frikkieh here with his E90 325i. He had a whole host of things going on with that engine - the metallic ticking from the HVA and then of course the erratic idle from this snapped bolt and loose sprocket on the crank shaft.

When last was the oil changed on your car? Is it still under motorplan?

No motor plan. Was serviced last week. So far I have not had the problem since I got the car back. But if it comes back I will keep this thread updated.

Ok so car was serviced, runs good, did a 400km trim then guess what, had the idling issue again.

Took the car back to Pro Car, they read the codes and said Vanos Mech. Fault. They want to replace the vanos system what they told me.

But fist I will investigate if I can find the problem starting with what you suggested Phillip.

Thanks for the info!

Thanks for the info. After I get back home from my 9 week trip I will start with the breather and take it from there. Will keep the thread updated. If any new info or advice please let me know.
