Hi Guys

Got a whining noise that turned into a loud rattle from my Air-con Pump , rattle is there if air-con is switched on or off . I have a suspicion that it is either the pulley bearing or the clutch but leaning more to the bearing due to the fact that if i wedge the pulley a bit while running the clapping is gone and the whining is back .

Question is can you replace just the bearing or clutch or do you need to replace the whole pump

PS ! new pump at SMG is R19126.00 :skit:

well yes but you never know the condition , think it will be a case of penny wise pound foolish. Also if the compressor stood for a long time the seals become brittle, reason why you have to run it at least every second week.

PS ! think i know why the shaft snapped ...

Taxi stopping in front of you +Kickdown +Vonos +aircon on = snapped shaft

If the shaft snapped, the whole system might be full of shavings.
Therefore the receiver dryer needs to be changed as well, after the whole system was flushed.

No matter how you drive the car, it can ever cause an AC pump to snap. It was probably a case of owner/service centre negligence by never servicing the AC, and a manufacturing defect.

When you depress the accelerator all the way down, it switches the AC off in any case for a number of seconds

The condenser was replaced and system flushed and new dryer in Dec due to rock meets condenser incident , Before that i cant say what preventative maintenance was done except that I did when i bought the car a year ago. I have asked the tech to check the oil content for shavings just in case and give me a sapmle for a Wear-check, but the system will be flushed with new dryer fitted .

I snapped a shaft before on one of my previous cars due to hard acceleration with air-con on, the switched under the pedal was faulty and I sheared the shaft right at the pulley bearing this was on a Astra TS ... on the BMW maybe the aircon never switched off , maybe the forces exerted on the pulley by car in a high rev range and aircon switched back on sheared the shaft but i think as this is the second car that this has happened to me .....it just me
