E90 330d vs E90 330d LCi

Hi Guys,

I've got a quick question regarding the E90 330d. Im looking at getting a pre-facelift mode (2006). From what i've heard, the new facelift 330d makes a touch more power, 180kw, than the one im looking at. Will a simple software update from BMW unleash the extra ponnies or will i have to go aftermarket?

Is there any major issues on the car i should be aware of? The car is sitting on 90 000km's but i do want to extend the maintenance plan to atleast 120 000km?

Thanks for the advice!

they have differnet motors.
i think the 180kw uses variable vane turbo technology with 3rd generation common rail injection

BTW, the codes don't refer to the facelift but rather body types:

E90 - 4 door
E92 - 2 door
E93 - cabrio

Hence, you're talking about E90 pre and post facelifts only.

Facelift also called LCI (Life Cycle Impulse) IIRC ...

Have you got a quote to upgrade that service plan, you may be in for a surprise...

Yep, at 90k, it may not be worth it. Yes, you get peace of mind until 120k, but that's just about 1 service only and you're going to pay a sh!t load for that MP extension.

Also, the 330d's turbos are pretty good compared to the 320d or something stupid like a polo TDI :mmm:.

I would have the car sent to an independant place though (like TuneTech, etc) before the MP expires to make sure everything is 100% and do one final MP claim at BMW with all the faults they find.

Thanks for the info... im a bit out of touch with the BMW naming nomenclature.

Can i get a motorplan from someone other than BMW? Who do you guys recommend?

I can just imagine what services on a 330d will cost after 100 000km!

The preface engine is completely different to the new 180kw even the ECU's are different. So to answer ur question - no u wont get the new 330d power. Now what is also worth noting is that the original E90 330d came with 160Kw and some 2years +- later BMW increased it to 170Kw.U need to check which power output you have. Also each engine or call it chassis no is mapped to a specific KW from the factory.Unless the factory "opens" that code for ur model u wont get the extra 10Kw if u have the 160Kw engine. As an eg VW golf 5 GTi's were also factory chipped and those that did not have the factory chip could never hook it up at the dealer and download the chip.BTw check out superchips for a chip upgrade.u wont go wrong

My 330i E46 is pushing about 203kw on fly... after chip and filter.
It al cost me R4500. Yeah I also think that you gonna pay for services...
I paid R2500 for my last one... diesel will be atleast double... and the turbo is around R20k ...
IF it goes... but at the end of the day it will be a personal choice...
To extend your motorplan to 120 000 that you can also look at around R20k.
Cheers

This for E46

Budget for about R2000 per service (this takes care of engine oil change , air filter , diesel filter) and the usual other service items.

Turbo is normally upto R20k at agents , can be gotten for cheaper depending on where you shop but the 330d turbo (Garret) is quite rare so shop around (no the turbo from a E46 320d is not going to work)

Brakes (I did mine now at 128XXX kilos) and paid just over R8500 for front and rear discs and front and rear pads including other supplementary work.

Xenon bulbs will set you back between R2500 for Osram D2-S to R3500 for Philips D2-S (they don't normally pop BUT in my case the one bulb is pinker than the other one) & the igniters normally blow (swopping the bulbs around will confirm if the igniter is blown and if the bulb powers on then the igniter is fine and the bulb is shot)

Ironically whilst the colour may be pinker / purplish the light output does'nt seem to decrease so oncoming traffic will notice the different colours but from behind the wheel at night you will still see the road ahead clearly.

Automatic gearbox - ZF in my car - gearbox oil is lifetime and the rule of thumb from the BMW dealer mechanics that is if it aint broke then don't fix (don't scratch where it does'nt itch)

Wiper blades will set you back under R200 from the dealer (this is the actual rubber blade and you attach it to the arm yourself)

Overall (this 330d is my 4th E46 and aside from engine failure or turbo issues) it is not an expensive car "yet"

Diff - I can't comment on.
Gearbox replacement - I can't comment on.

Paid R13k to extend my motorplan by 15000km on my 320d, don't know if it would be similar for the 330d.

Was worth it though, in that 15000km past 100000km it cost them over R60k under motorplan to fix.

Needless to say, will never buy a diesel again unless it has below 30000km on the clock. With the average mileage you can use it for 2 years and swing it before motorplan/years end.

Also, when I wanted to trade the vehicle, they offered me 50% of trade value. Furthermore, the car all of a sudden had a code attached to it due to all the turbos that was replaced. And you all know that you don't touch a BMW with a code on it.

Luckily Leo Haese took it off my hands.

Basically I found that if a diesel goes it goes like stink. You can't beat the economy and the torque. But when it all goes pear shaped, it costs you a bucket load.

All 530d's and 330d's we got in this country since 2001 have variable vane turbos... Afaik E90's all have 3rd gen common rail injection.
