Crossposting from another forum. I don't know these cars.

What do you think of teh 320d price!!

A friend is looking at buying used 3 series and we have identified 2 possibilities:

1. 2011 320i manual with 45000km on the clock @ R180 000
2. 2005 320d Auto with 64000km on the clock @ R135 000

Now for the questions:
1. Which one would you buy?
2. Are they reliable cars?
3. What were common problems with these BMW's?
4. What would maintenance costs be like on both these respectively?
5. Are the prices acceptable?

The diesel would be the preferred choice, but the petrol unit will still be covered by maintenance plan and warranty...

All inputs would be greatly valued.

Well... the diesel does have good mileage but again the car is 9 years (give or take) old.. so you never know.. but having owned 2 320i's and 1 diesel.. all I can say is.. I'd rather fix the diesel but that's just me.. For peace of mind in that range I guess the '11 makes the most sense?

I can't comment on maintenace but my 320d gets an oil swop every 6-8K kms

Get a newer model 320d. Simple as that.

Yeah for 180k you should be able to get 320d in good nick. I am selling mine this time next year, (2011 E90) and would be looking around the 200k mark (Would be looking to buy a 2014 model then). So I imagine you could get a low mileage 2009/2010 320d for around 180k.

Edit:

Had a look on carfind just now. 2009 320d 87 000 km's 180k.

i would go for the 320d. im looking at the 06 model also auto and have only read good things about them and the cost of maintenance isnt too steep at all considering what a car it is when you put your foot down.

If he's willing to spend up to R180k 320i

He can get a newer model 320d for that price and maybe one that is still on MP.
