e90 320d tyres query

I need to replace the rear tyres on my car, did the front december, i got 60k on them. The front is 225*45*17, no problem, the rear is 255*40*17, this is my problem, they are very expensive, why did this car come with two size tyres?
This is not a performance car, and i am not pushing it to perform.
My question is this :
Can i fit 225*45*17 on the rear? I know the rims front is 8j and rear is 8 1/5j.
My reason for this thinking is that two of the rims was swopped by the tyre shop that fitted the previous tyres as i ran all this time with a 225*45*17 on a 8 1/5j rim and a 255*40*17 on a 8j rim. I looked at merc's with 17" rims and they have 225*45*17 front and rear. Let me be realistic for a while, 225*45*17 tyres are by no means skinny and are readily available. If this is a bad idea i will gladly like to know if somebody has experience with the same problem.:flyfun:

I dont know if you have an F30....but I run the 225 tyres and theres no issues.

What you maybe should keep in mind is that the smaller the profile the harsher the ride, so keep take that and your budget in mind and buy accordingly

Well, you most likely have a 320d M Sport which would have narrow and wide wheel/tyre set up. But you could have 225 width front and rear which the normal Exclusives had. Fitting 225 on the rear wheels is not ideal but can be done and will result in some stretching of the sidewalls...

So i fitted new tyres on the rear today, decided to fit regular tyres as i have a spare filling most of the boot, aswell as a compressor and puncture repair kit already.
I found falkon tyres for R1500 ea, for 255*40*17, i managed to get 63k on the rear tyres.

Falken, oops

Good tyre....not a household brand in SA yet, hence pricing is less than the more popular ones, but they have already got a big following in Europe and USA.

Its our "in-house" brand at the shop, and we are trying our best to promote it to the "brand=hungry" consumer as a good alternative...definitely not cheap "Chinese rubber" used on most Mini-bus taxi's
