E87 120i Performance Upgrades

I'd like some info from guys who have done software upgrades on the E87 120i. Remapping or piggyback. I have had a look on the forum and there is very little info on the 120i specifically. Is that because the gains aren't great?

Feel free to add any feedback on other performance mods on the 120i as well.

For interest's sake, I have a 2005 120i steptonic with 67 000km on the clock.

Thanks !

Hey Griffin, I don't believe a piggy back will be able to provide you with much (or even any) gain, a chip works best on a forced induction vehicle or a N/A motor that's been modified, and even then I believe it's more for the sake of tuning the engine to allow for fueling cams etc etc ... Your power gain (if any) to money spent ratio doesn't really justify spending the 4-5k on the piggy back...

OP from your post it is not clear what your goal is. What do you want to do or achieve with the performance upgrades?

You can go mild or wild with any platform. If you just thinking of a simba chippie for the car there wont be any noticeable power gains on the 120. Best to leave it as is and enjoy the car.

My E87 120d is completely stock except it has a chip because i wanted to reduce the fuel consumption even more. The consumption gain after the tune was marginal with the tune because the diesel is already very frugal. But i gained a reasonable Tq increase. But the actual benefit of the chip was not the power hike because the 2005 e87 models have an old dme. But the chip removed the turbo lag throughout the gear/rev range. That made the chip definitely worthwhile.

Twinz, what was your torque gain? I'm planning on having a unichip installed and am curious to know, they recon KW pushed to 150 (atf) and around 420nm...

@griffin I have a 05 116i and what iv done too add more grunt and little power which is alot is I removed the resonator box out exhaust system, it adds pops and burples on start up and good, then I added a k&n air filter and this has done wonders for the little 116i.
You can try it too.

Im now looking at cutting the cat out and adding a mini cat.

Need more power to turn the big rims
Lol

I bought the PetrolPower piggyback chip for my 1er but took it off before I sold it. I didn't give huge massive gains but the driveability was definitely improved. The throttle response was sharper and the car just felt more eager to get going. I just have the chip sitting at home now. if anyone is keen on it, PM me ;-)

It's a really simple DIY, but if you want it installed, Petrol Power Have installers in CPT. You could get the chip from me and get them to install it for you  PM me if you want more details bud.

Hi Bud, do you still have this chip?

I have remapped over 15 120i's and the gains have been small but noticeable. All customers have been happy. Car revs up quicker at high revs and more torque in the mid-range. Consumption goes down about half a point.

Hey Sherwin, I have a 2010 125i coupe still on plan and have been looking for some extra power.

Can you safely extract more power from it and will Bmw be able to see it when car goes in for service, obviously I don't want to lose the plan.

Hi, yes the 125i is a detuned 3.0 l motor. Gets good gains, especially in torque. In high gears you can feel a big difference in mid to low range acceleration. The map is undetectable.

Hi, how much do you charge for the remap
