E60 motorised boot catch

Morning all

My 2008, 530d boot started acting up the weekend. Stop opening with the switch and remote, I had to unlock it with the key.
After some investigation it seems that the catch isn't latching reliably any more.
Will probably have to replace.
Anyone else had such an issue?

Hey there,
similar issue on my e60 520d , lucky sorted under MP latch was replaced, mine actually stopped opening remote , or manual , key did not work too.
One BMW mech suggested breaking taillight other thought of stripping rear seat (mine isM sport seat don't fold) basically no clues the solution when latch fails is to drill a tiny hole behind number plate using diagram for latch location  google it any how as I said Cedar BMW managed and replaced entire latch must be fragile.

Lucky there were no dead bodies in boot when latch got stuck considering it took a week to sort at two dealers, it could have been a smelly affair :rollsmile:

Good[/b] luck

Typically the spring fails.

Alternative is to get another spring from WURTH and replace it or dealers for new locking assembly

I sorted my problem out last night, after I couldn't even close the boot. The motorised catch wasn't the problem. I found the solution on the bimmerforums.
Where the wire loom exists the tube from the boot lid close to the boot hinge there is an L shaped rubber grommet / bung. In that 90 degree kink the wires break due to small bending radius and fatigue.
Fixed the broken wires insulated the broken insulation, works properly again, don't buy a new catch.

Well done on sorting this out. Isn't it amazing that Google has only been around for 15 years yet we can't do without :rollsmile::rollsmile:

Question remains if wires or spring in latch fails you are unable to access boot in your case opening with key itself would have meant that the electrical or selenoid is kaput but with spring intact the mechanical operation will remain.
My case was that neither worked also the OBD diagnostic would have reported broken circuit in wire etc so I guess you did not even bother with dealer:=):
