Peter can you comment on the use of NGK plugs (as fitted to this fine example) vs OEM Bosch on the e46 ///M ?

I thought NGK was the OEM spec, but lets get SirGreek to answer?
He can even see date stamps that my eyes are to poor to see... :flyfun:

Dawie NGK is the OE fitted to the s54.

So I spent some time cleaning the cylinder head.
I gave it a light clean as it did not warrant anything more than that.......(not like your car my friend :) )

Exhaust gearbox had to be removed to go to engineers for the oil pump disc so it has been deep cleaned.
No rattle kit was done on the car as the spline shafts run silently.

Waiting for fuel filter and air filter and off it goes to daddy

Will the lack of use also cause the discolouration?

Lack of use will not cause discolouration.

Lack of oil changes will though.

Typically the car will be started allowed to idle and get hot and then switched off.

This done repeatedly without the concomitant oil changes will present with fuel contaminated, old oil and the discolouration soon follows.

Equally when a car is driven very hard and then switched off immediately,it will allow the fumes to settle on the components to the degree where one cannot move a cam follower on the shaft to change shims. (Had one of those).

Best practice would be for oil to be changed annually on cars that do not see use but are started regularly and left to idle.

Best way to remedy this? Or is it scrub down and elbow grease?

On an earlier post I was postulating that the fuel filter would be dated 2005.....herewith the proof that I was correct....roll on Motorplan.

Ready to go back home which will be done tomorrow and and and and I shall be driving it there :)

I have always found Carbon Black to be one of the most appealing colours although hard to keep clean.

When I see the multicolour changes it merely re affirms my sentiment that it is one of the most intriguing and appealing colours.

I wanted to mention that I am taking my camera with me for the road trip as well as for some of the cars that this owner has stashed away.

Hopefully he will allow me to photograph some of his machinery so that I may share it with you........let us see how things pan out.

I drove the car some 200Kms back to its owner today.

This is the first long trip I have undertaken in an M3 and I was left absolutely in awe.

For a 15 year old design the chassis dynamics are right up there with the most modern of GTs.
The power of the NA 3,2L motor is intoxicating.
With the vanos working the car builds speed very quickly as well as very smoothly

I had a blast.
The fuel consumption was 7,8L/100Km with some spirited driving included.

So......I spent a delightfull day with my friend and got to see some of the other cars he has garaged in his house.
I shall be posting some of the pics I took in this thread.

It was time for me to leave and this is what I drove back home

1994 build 1995 registered e36M3 with 43000Km.
A spotless car.
Helrot with titan leather.

We will do a vanos overhaul and as a precaution check on clearances although I doubt that it will need them reset at this low mileage.
The S50 motors have very big shims which do not go out of spec very quickly unlike the s54 motors.

Prev I am told that in that area there are a few very low mileage cars which are in storage....

One of the five 325iS garaged.

One of two ALPINA B3 2,7 e30 in the country.
Car has all ALPINA tags and is in what would be considered original condition.

In the far left corner lurks a 2002 with original books in reasonable condition which will in all likelihood undergo modernisation whilst retaining the original look as well as a 1M with some 6000Km (if memory serves) as well as a daily driven 325iS with some 180000Km.

The following pics are from what is undoubtedly the cleanest 325iS I have ever seen.
One needs to consider that the car has 145000Km on the clock and is absolutely clean and perfect with no blemishes and resprayed panels.
Drivers seat has some wear on the bolster which is consistent with the age of the car.

The above photo is the engine compartment of the daily driven 325iS.
