E46 Replacement Refurbished Vanos

Hi Guys

My E46 330i 2002 has 179 000km on the clock and I think it is time to replace the Vanos seals with the Beisan seals and maybe the rattle kit as well as a precuation.

I have had a look at the guides but it seems like I dont have all the tools required for the repair and can't have the car out of service for long.

Is there maybe a place I can buy a refurbished complete Vanos with these components already installed for a quick swop repair?

If so,can you please supply the contact details?

Will this make a big difference as I hear the Vanos degrades gradually and you do not really noticeit going bad.

rather plan and do the Seals bud, the cost of a Vanos Unit will be a bit much on the pricey side

i was the same position as you..infact i bought a second hand vanos unit from ebay and tried to do the seals and bearings on there...then just do a full swap. i didnt have an impact wrench either and in an attempt to get to the bearings, i tightened the vise and cracked the vanos piston quite badly while using a breaker bar.

luckily, my original vanos was untouched at this stage, so i just removed it and replaced the seals.. then put it all back. was done about 50,000km's ago and running good. no rattles.. nada.

please dont attempt to do the bearings unless you have the proper kit to disassemble them correctly..they can get damaged easily.

Get the soft jaws from Sean for your vice and then loan or buy an impact wrench.

The 18v one from Addendorf will work fine. R1000 off rand once off.

economy didnt dramatically change as i thought it would, but was better than before.

the biggest improvement though is the engine smoothness...especially between that 3000 and 4000 rpm range. it idles much better in the morning after a cold start too. my car is automatic, and before i did the vanos seals.. it was difficult to get a smooth take off from a stop... the new seals fixed that.

overall it is worth doing. good luck and let us know how it goes.

@charlie brown, i was using the soft jaws... didnt stop the piston from getting cracked though. you really need the impact wrench + soft jaws for this job.
