I was browsing my Haynes manual and stubbled upon the 330 has a oil temp sensor too ! But how do we get that info, hidden in the cluster menu perhaps ?

You get the water temp and oil temp readings with diagnostic software if you look at the live data. Even the temperature of air going into the motor. It would be really cool if this could be displayed on the instrument cluster.

yes but if you look at what the OBD reports on things like the torque app it is not easily accessible...
I was looking at getting this:
DM-100 OBDII Touch
but it does not solve my oil temp problem
I would still have to run a distribution block with separate sensors...

Sean, just keep in mind that BMW uses a different output on the OBDII port than most other vehicle manufacturers. A different type of encoding of sorts. The iPhone app for instance does not work on my e46, but it does on a Volvo V50/S40 T5 for instance, yet I can get all the info from a BMW ScanTool on my laptop.

There are loads of details available in the hidden OBC menu, there should be a way of coding it to be available from the BC stalk button.
I have read somewhere that someone coded the virtual dipstick from the CSL to his BC button.
Maybe tuners can do this?
Some stats that I would love to see in the BC menu is the following from the hidden menu:
6 Fuel Level sensor inputs in liters
7 Engine Temperature and Speed
7.0 021+ Coolant/Engine temperature (2.1C)
7.2 + Engine speed / Current RPMs 1/min
7.3 + Vehicle speed / Current Speed in km/hour
8.0 1d0+ System voltage ADC-Value Hex code
8.2 0000 ADC Value brake degradation sensor (000=o.k.)
9.0 140 Battery Voltage - 140 = UB 14.0v
I have searched this thing to death not saying it impossible but it does not seem anyone has done this... well least it has not been put in the net... if someone does stumble upon a solution please let me know :rollsmile:

I was reading up on a Dynavin unit (another story) and it was stated their that only the M3 publishes the oil temp data on the CAN. This is the reason that non-m3 e46 dynavin owners are not able to get this data on the unit.
This is probably of no use to the thread, but may shine a light on the reasons for the oil temp not working.

I quickly plugged the m3 cluster into the 330i last night, its got 111 000km on it and the oil temp gauge works without messing around with wiring so that is cool, it is however a cluster from a SMG model so the yellow ASC and transmission lights were on due to the fact that there was no communication with a SMG module, a little cluster reprogramming will sort that out though.

you should never ever rev the engine till the oil is up to temp thats why... it is also useful when diagnosing potential problems...
my car gets redlined every time it goes out... right now i wait till water temp has been up for a while before i increase RPM but this is just a guess I would rather know what temp the oil is...

Also keep in mind that the oil used in the M3 is almost like glue when it is cold so it is is good to know that it is at temperature before pushing it. Other than that there is no real need to know the oil temp on an NA road car (but it is still a nice to know). On the other e46's the oil used is not so thick so it is not so important, but still a good idea to get it to operating temperature before pushing it. 15 min of driving with the coolant up to temp is usually enough to get the oil up to operating temperature. On an e46 the coolant is usually up to temperature 2-3km after the gauge indicates it is (ie when it got to the 12 o clock position on hte gauge).
By up to temp I mean the oil temperature is above 75-80 degrees, and not using the light up rev counter as a guide as that will tell you it is fine to rev the car 5000rpm a couple of seconds after start up and that it is ok to rev the car 7000 just after the oil temperature starts registering on the gauge.
Oil pressure is something I would like displayed in the cluster and something that is very important on any car road or race. Coolant pressure would also be nice :rollsmile:
